Code of Ethics
Booklets have been printed up and will be given
out to each family in 2008. Within the booklets, there is a pull out
section for registration and a part to sign in agreement with rules
of the club.
Medal Presentations 07
The Juniors enjoyed a night in the Courthouse
bar, thanks to all in providing food. The underage had an enjoyable
evening in the social centre and some registration was taken in this
occasion.
Carbery Rangers’ Night at the Dogs
The Ladies Club put in a great effort to help
Carbery Rangers on this occasion selling tickets for the event.
Fundraising
Two bag packs were held in Dunnes, Clonakilty
this year. It was a great success although more volunteers are need
for future bag packs. It is a great way to give back to the club and
only takes a couple of hours of your time, Dates for the 2008 bag
packs are due to take place on St. Patrick’s Weekend and on December
8th. The church gate was held in Feb
2007. We hope to get a summer date in 2008.
All Ireland Final
The club proudly organised a bus trip to the
All-Ireland Final, to support Laura and the Cork team. There was a great response from the
locality and 3 buses were filled. On October 5th,
2007, the Brendan Martin cup made its first
appearance ( and hopefully not its last!) in Rosscarbery. Team
members, Briege Corkery and Norma Kelly attended, along with team
mentor Eileen O Brien. Laura MacMahon thanked all those
for their support and traveling to the final in numbers.
Congratulations to Laura on winning an All
Ireland Senior Medal with Cork. This was a proud day for those involved in
the club. Well done to all those who represented the club at county
levels and in other competitions.
As a voluntary club with many expenses, it is
essential for us to run a number of fundraising efforts through the
year. The annual Ladies Football camp, which is organized every
July, was a great success with over 70 attending. All the girls had
an enjoyable week, practising their skills and
participating in matches.
The Annual Walk also raided funds for
the club The annual church gate collection was held on the weekend
of 24/25th of Feb, 2007 in Ross,
Reenascreena and Lisavaird.
Competition results 2007
2007 was a super year for our underage teams.
Hopefully 2008 will be just as successful for our teams. Thanks to
all the trainers and mentors who give up their time and have huge
dedication to coaching the girls.

HISTORY OF THE ROSSCARBERY
LADIES FOOTBALL
CLUB
The
present Rosscarbery Ladies Football Club was founded in 1999
following a visit by Mr. Joe MacDonagh, the then guest speaker at a
Carbery Rangers function. In his speech he urged those
present to also encourage girls to get involved in the sport. Denis
Hayes and Billy Creedon approached a few ladies interested in Ladies
football and it was found there was enough interest in the parish to
start up a club.
The first
committee was formed at a meeting, presided over by Johnny Murphy of
Carbery Rangers, which was held in the Celtic Ross Hotel. The
following Committee was elected: Chairperson – Eliz Hayes,
Frehanes; Vice Chairperson Margaret Hayes, Burgatia; PRO
Marian O’Mahony. It was decided to name the club
Rosscarbery Ladies Football Club.
Since the
club was founded it has gone from strength to strength and is now
one of the biggest clubs in the County. The
club initially started with U12 and U14 teams in 1999, with
approximately 40 girls in total being registered with the County
Board.
This year 2008, we have teams entered in grades, from U10
right up to junior and senior ladies teams with approximately 150
girls registered. A brief run down of club
activities and achievements since its foundation
follows:
2002
This year
was the most successful year to date in the club’s short
history.
Fielding three underage teams, U12, U14, U16 and for the
first time a junior team.
The U12
team were runners up in the County and were very unlucky not to win
the West Cork championship.
The U16
team finished runners up in the West Cork championship, while the
Junior team failed to register any win in their first season.
Pride of
place this year went to our U14 team who did everyone proud of
becoming County Champions, defeating Dunmanus Rovers. This
was a tough encounter, in a rain drenched Drimoleague pitch, in
front of a large crowd. The cup was presented to
captain Sinead O’Brien who was delighted to receive it on behalf of
her teammates.
2002 was
also a great year for one of the stars of that team, Elaine Whooley,
who was selected to play for Cork at U14 level. Elaine
wore the read jersey with pride and helped the rebel County to both
Munster and All Ireland titles. Everyone in the club was proud of
her on this marvelous achievement.
2003
Following
the interest shown the previous season, it was decided to enter a
junior team along with the usual underage teams. However
this year the U10 squad also lined out for a number of friendly
games and played in the county blitz.
The U12
team reached the County final and were unlucky to be beaten by
Carrigaline. The team then went on to win the
West Cork final, beating Kinsale in a great game of football played
in Clonakilty. Captain Aine Kelly was delighted
to lead her team back to Rosscarbery as Champions.
The U14
team reached the County final only to be beaten by a strong
Ballingeary team. Our U16 team was beaten in the County Final by
Valley Rovers.
The
Junior team gave a strong count of themselves in the league before
exiting this competition to a strong Watergrasshill team. They
then had a great run in the championship beating Nemo in the County
semi-final. They lost to Dromina, by the
narrowest of margins and after a great contest, in front of a large
crowd of supporters who traveled to Kilmurray for the final.
The club
was also represented on various County teams by Aine Kelly and Norin
O’Brien at U12 level and Lisa Hennessey at U16. Lisa
won a Munster Medal with the Cork team this
year.
2004
This was
another great year for all concerned. The U12 team played exceptionally
well in the West Cork league, winning all their games and qualifying
to play in the “A” County Championship, only to be beaten by a much
stronger St Val’s team. Disappointment was also to follow
when they were defeated by Kinsale in the final of the West Cork
Championship.
The U14
team also faced disappointment when they were beaten in the County
final for the second year in a row.
The U16
team of 2004 were a very strong outfit and hopes were high for them
but they were unfairly graded to play premier Championship when they
were no match for a very strong Beara outfit.
Better
days lay ahead for most of the team as they were part of the U21 and
Junior ladies squads. The U21 team won the County
championship after a great campaign beating Boherbue in the
final.
This was a great day for the club; our first championship at
this level.
The
Junior ladies were very unlucky not to win the County final but
history was to repeat itself two years in a row: Ross
had an 11 point lead in the second half and somehow let it slip and
were beaten by Midleton by 2 points. This was a very disappointing day
for everyone concerned, especially the players and the large crowd
of Ross supporters who traveled on the day. But all
was not lost as we faced the same opposition in the final of the
league two weeks later and Ross reversed the result of 2004. This
victory
crowned a great year for the club. Team
management here were Pat Lane, Pat O’Donovan and Pat
O’Connor.
Sinead
O’Brien was on the Cork U16 team which won the All Ireland
Final.
Also representing the Club on County teams were Norin O’Brien
and Aileen Kearns, U14. Here Cork won the Munster
Final.
Rosscarbery Ladies was the 5th largest club in the County in 2004 and
the breakthrough at Junior Level, along with continuing success at
under age must surely auger well for the future of the club in the
years ahead. The Club’s success stems from
hard working committee members and also the dedication of the clubs
mentors and players.
2005
In the
club’s seventh year of existence, we are proud to say that, with one
hundred and twenty four registered players and fielding eight teams,
we are now the second largest club in the county. In the
2005 season, we entered our first minor team, which turned out to be
a very rewarding move, bringing the cup back to
Ross.
At the
beginning of the season, there were over thirty players registered
in the U14 age category resulting in the club entering a second U14
team.
With the
club now fielding extra teams it was necessary to purchase another
set of jerseys. It was decided that we would ask
all the businesses and employers in the locality for a small
contribution towards them. One sponsor’s logo would be
picked at random to be printed on the jersey. The
response was brilliant, with “Nolan’s Bar” being the lucky official
sponsor.
Throughout the season the club played
approximately fifty-two competitive games. There
were mixed fortunes for the club. The underages being unlucky and
at times hard done by, while the minors and juniors lifted the cups
and brought home the treble.
U10: Had
great enjoyment in the few friendly games and the blitz they
played.
U12: They
were very unlucky to lose the league final against Valley
Rovers.
They also progressed well in the championship. They
fought hard in the county semi-final but lost to a stronger St Val’s
side.
U14A: They advanced nicely to the
league final vs. Valley Rovers, however they did not lift the
trophy.
Unfortunately they were knocked out in the first round of the
championship by a skilful and physical Carrigaline
team.
U14B: There were mixed fortune for the
second U14 team in the championship, they lost to Castlemagner in
what was a very messy game but were allowed back into the
championship when it turned out Castlemagner had not been
registered. They were very unlucky to lose at
the county semi-final stage to a Ballincollig side that went on the
win the competition.
U16: They
lost the league semi-final to Valley Rovers, in what was a very low
scoring game. They were very unfortunate in the
championship as they played a very close game and were up two points
until Erin Own scored a late second goal.
U18: It was
the club’s first year entering a team in this age category and it
was a great achievement for them to win the County
Final.
U21: After
great success in 2004, it was a big let down when the girls were
destroyed by Kildorrery in the first round of the championship in a
very poor performance from the Ross side. However
it was this huge disappointment, along with the loss of the county
junior finals in the previous two years, that made the girls commit
to the training and added to their determination to play football at
a level they are all well able to produce.
Juniors: After approximately sixty hard
training sessions, their commitment paid off. They
went through the campaign unbeaten in both league and championship,
bringing home the double. It was a huge occasion for the
club to be promoted to Junior A in the 2006 competition.
The club
would like to congratulate Lisa Hennessy on winning two county
medals in one day. Lisa, along with Megan O’Riordan,
was also involved in her school reaching and winning the Munster
final.
Well done
to the four O’Brien sisters, Sinead, Maire, Noreen and Eilish on
their achievements of winning in total; twelve
Countys, four Munster and two All Ireland medals this
year.
The club
was well represented in the Carbery Peil na Cailini, with Tara
Maguire, Anne Maire O’Neill, Aoife Goggin, Edel Hayes and Hannah
Shanahan making the squad. Aoife, Tara and Hannah went on to
represent Cork in this competition.
We would
also like to congratulate Tara Maguire on making the mini sevens
squad.
She made her appearance in Croke Park in October during the
half time of the All Ireland Ladies Final, when Cork lifted the
trophy.
2006
In the
Club’s 8th year of existence, we are
now proud to say that 130 girls are registered with our club. This
year Rosscarbery Ladies Football played over 62 competitive games
through out the year. Again this year was full of mixed
fortunes and yet again we finished off our year with the club being
extremely proud of all our players, both underage and
juniors.
U12: Our
under 12 team was very unfortunate this year. At
county championship level they got to the semi final of the
competition where they were beaten by Donoughmore. Also
they lost the County League final to Valley Rovers.
U14
(a)
Our U14A team didn’t qualify for County Championship so their
season finished early. As a result the West Cork Board
decided to run another competition which we are proud to say our U14
team won outright.
U14(b) Our U14B team were a wonderful
surprise to our club this year and surpassed everyone’s expectations
by winning both the County C championship and the West Cork
League.
U16: Our
U16’s lost out on the West Cork League final to Valley Rovers this
year.
They are still waiting to play their County Championship semi
final which ran on terribly late this year.
Minors: These were beaten by St Val’s in
the semi final of the Championship.
Junior
A:
After a hugely successful 2005 a lot was expected from the
Junior A team for the coming year. Their dedication and commitment
showed again this year after 70 hard training sessions.
Unfortunately they were knocked out of the Junior A
Championship when Liscarroll beat them. Once
again they met the Liscarroll side in the County League final where
this time a very deserving Rosscarbery side took the title. A proud
moment for these girls and their club as they have remained unbeaten
in the League since 2004 winning division 4, 3 and 2. Also in
December under very cold, wet and windy conditions they also won the
West Cork League beating Valley Rovers.
Also, in
July of this year, Clonakilty Ladies football club organized a blitz
in Clonakilty. We entered 2 teams in this
competition with our stronger Junior A team winning the Blitz
outright.
Junior
C:
Because of the large numbers of Juniors in attendance at
training we decided to start a second Junior team. These
were mostly made up of the younger girls coming up from U16
level.
They progressed to the ¼ final stages where they put up a
great fight against a strong Fermoy side who eventually took the
game after extra time. Also they reached the Semi Finals
of the league losing few of their games. So
hopefully next year with a little more experience under their belts
at Junior Level they will reap the rewards.
At the
end of this year the Club was once again proud of all our teams hard
work, dedication and achievements. Well done to all those involved,
both players and mentors. Also congratulations to all those
who represented the Club at County Level again this year.
