There was great celebrations in Rosscarbery last Saturday 6th November when the long awaited County U16 B final was eventually played and the Ross girls were crowned county Champions. The game played in Carrigadrohid against Donoughmore was a very tough encounter for both sides with very heavy underfoot conditions. The Ross girls played with a never say die attitude to the very end and just pulled away from Donoughmore with 2 late points to win on a score line of 2.10 to 3.04.This was a great win as we had to start without two of our stars both injured Niamh O'Sullivan and Ciara O'Rourke. Captain Laura Cooke accepted the cup on behalf of the team which was Nicole Hayes, Cilonadha Maguire, Emma O'Callaghan, Michelle Hayes, Siobhan O'Donovan, Ruth Nagle, Sinead Lane, Niamh O'Brien, Fiona O'Sullivan, Aoife Madden, Eimear O'Rourke, Mairead O'Driscoll, Bernadette O'Driscoll, Nadine Hayes, Laura Cooke (Capt) Kate O'Neill, Aisling Cahalane, Shannon Hill, Oilbhe O'Callaghan, Claire Cooke.

Intermediate Team

Ross ladies made club history last Saturday when they overcame the challenge of Dr Crokes from Killarney in the Munster Semi final, which was played in CIT. Playing against a strong wind in the first half it took Ross some time to settle into this game with some wayward shooting from the forwards while the defence had their work cut out to hold the constant attack from the Crokes  forwards, Ross went into the break down two pts. After the break they came out a very determined side with nothing on their minds only a place in the Munster Final which the duly achieved on a score line of 2-12o 1-09.This is the first time a Ladies team from Rosscarbery  will contest a munster final which will take place on Sunday 17th  October with venue TBC

            U14

Ross u 14 team played the long awaited league final in wet  and windy Ahiohill last Sat evening , this was a game that could have gone either way and where maybe a draw would have being a fair result giving the conditions and brave performances by both teams, but it was Valley rovers who got the lucky break and were awarded a penalty well into injury time which they converted and went on to win by 3 points.

            U12

This Saturday the U 12 team will contest the U 12  West Cork Final

V Valley rovers, these two teams met in the Co semi final where they  finished level and Valleys went on to win in extra time, a result the Ross girls hope to  overturn in the final Sat in Clonakilty at 11am.

Finally a big thanks to all in the community who supported our annual sponsored walk recently , some cards are still outstanding and can be returned to any committee member.

The Junior A team were in action last Wednesday night against Nemo Rangers in the Nemo pitch. The forwards really shone in this encounter with some great passing and fine scores. The Ross girls led  8 points to 1 at the break, but the Nemo girls put on some impact subs in the second half which really intensified the game. After three unanswered points from Nemo, Fiona O’ Callaghan found the back of the net taking some of the pressure off Rosscarbery. Marian Murphy then blasted a great shot past the Nemo keeper to really put daylight between the teams. At this stage, the backs closed down the Nemo attack and great blocks were made at attempts on goal.  Ross maintained their lead throughout and the defence had the honour of holding a clean sheet from goals until the 28th minute when goalkeeper Aine Kelly was deemed to have stepped over the line after catching a high ball lobbed into the goalmouth. However, some great saves from her throughout the match really helped the Ross girls secure the match. Rosscarbery 2-12, Nemo Rangers 1-6. Team: Aine Kelly, Sarah Coakley, Kate Hourihane, Deirdre Murphy, Sinead O‘ Brien, Noreen O Brien, Cait Mennis, Vicky Hennessey, Fiona O Callaghan (1-0) ,Aine Hayes (0-1), Marian Murphy (1-3), Megan O Riordan, ,Aileen Kearns  (0-1).             The Junior B team played championship in Ballincollig on Monday evening against Glanworth. All the breaks seemed to go against the Ross girls as an early penalty  was sent wide. Glanworth really showed their skill with some well taken points. Linda Hayes kept the Ross team in touch with a powerful goal five minutes into the first half. Tireless work by the Ross midfield ensured the ball was sent into the Ross forwards, however, the Glanworth backs blocked several Ross attacks on goal. Ross conceded a couple of goals in the first half, leaving it all to do in the second half. The Ross girls gave it everything in the second half as Anne Cussen was denied a goal from the penalty spot, thanks to the Glanworth goalie and Sinead O’ Brien was unlucky not to hit the back of the net when her shot came off the crossbar. The Ross girls were beaten by one of the best teams in the championship, who will more then likely go on to contest the final. Well done to all involved. Team: Mary Connolly, Orla Kelly, Noreen McCarthy, Moira Walsh, Grainne O’ Sullivan, Eilis O’ Brien, Eimear Hayes, Hannah Butler, Sinead O’ Brien, Amy Hayes, Elaine Wholley, Denise Collins, Linda Hayes, Helen Whyte, Anne Cussen.       The Junior A team played their first round of championship against Naomh Abán in Dunmanway on Wednesday evening last.  The Ross girls got their championship off to a great start over coming Naomh Abán on a score line of 4-19 to 1-7. Máire O’ Brien opened the scoring sheet for the Ross girls with a free, quickly followed by a Tara Maguire goal. Marian Murphy then slotted over a free, however, the Naomh Abán girls tapped over two points in response. Then, Naomh Abán netted a goal, leaving them trailing by a point. The inside forward line put severe pressure on their direct opponents and claimed some wonderful scores from their defensive play, Aileen Kearns and Máire O’ Brien linking up brilliantly for some impressive scores. An excellent point from the sideline by Fiona O’ Callaghan just on the stroke of half time put the Ross girls in the lead, 1-8 to 1-2, the halftime score. The Ross girls really upped their game in the second half with some well fought battles at centre back where Noreen O’ Brien mopped up all the excess ball under severe pressure from her opponent. The forwards linked up well resulting in some fine scores. Tara Maguire added some impressive points before her second goal. Aoife Coakley made a impact in the second half as the result of some fine ball delivered from half forward line of Megan O’ Riordan and the tireless Marian Murphy.  Aine Kelly pulled off a remarkable save and great block down from Aine Hayes put the pressure off the Ross back line who were kept on their toes by some lively play from some of the Naomh Abán forwards.

The U21 team played their first round of the championship on Saturday evening last in Newtown pitch against Mourneabbey. Mourneabbey were quick off the mark scoring two points in the opening five minutes while the Ross girls had to wait until the tenth minute to get their name on the score sheet with a point from Tara Maguire. The Mourneabbey team then increased their lead to 0-5 to 0-2 after the first quarter. Mourneabbey added a succession of well taken points, putting them in the lead, 1-11 to 1-7 at the break; the Ross girls only kept in it by well worked move up from defence culminating in an Aileen Kearns goal. In the second half, Mourneabbey scored twice before the Ross girls upped their game and began a period of dominance with points from Maura O’ Brien and Orla O’ Sullivan. The scoreboard now read, Mourneabbey 1-13, Rosscarbery 1-12.  The defence were beginning to dominate with Sarah Coakley and Cait Mennis bursting out of defence, well supported by tireless runners, Noreen O’ Brien and Aine Hayes. A great save from the Ross goalie, Aine Kelly gave the Ross girl’s added momentum but against the run of play, Mourneabbey managed to net a goal and by adding two more points to their tally, the Mourneabbey girls were 6 points in the clear. The last ten minutes proved be to a nail-biting finish as Maura O’ Brien kept Ross hopes alive with a last gasp goal and a wonderful point. A great performance by Maura O’ Brien scoring 2-4 and a hat trick from Laura MacMahon sealed it for the Ross girls. Megan O’ Riordan added a fantastic individual point after a solid performance and Aoife Coakley also added her name to the score sheet with a well taken point, leaving the final score Ross 5-6 Gabriel Rangers 1-6.
