Carbery Rangers 1-14      Dohenys 0-8 Championship   06 -08-10

Carbery Rangers senior footballers advanced to the quarter final of the Cork county championship, with a convincing 1-14 to 8 points win over Dohenys in Rosmore on Friday evening last. Ross were first to get on the score sheet when John Hayes put the ball over the bar, Dohenys equalized shortly after. Then from the kick out Ross put in a lovely passing movement involving Michéal O’Sullivan, Declan Hayes and John Hayes scoring the only goal of the match, and this proved to be a valuable cushion for the Rangers. James Fitzpatrick was next to score as he kicked over a free, Dohenys reduced the lead briefly before Seamus Hayes put over another free. John O’Rourke punched one over, and then we had a Michéal O’Sullivan long range effort rewarded with another white flag. Declan Hayes added his name to the score sheet giving Ross a 1-6 to 4 point lead at break. Ross were well on top in the opening half with a strong wind across the pitch made scoring difficult.

John O’Rourke got a fist to another Rangers effort as the second period began, and Michéal succeeded with another long distance kick. John Hayes had the next two points for Ross from play. John O’Rourke punched his third point before James Fitzpatrick had a free converted. Ross were now seven points to the good and when John Hayes scored from the side line, Rangers were on their way to the next round and all that was left was a John O’Rourke point on the stroke of full time.

Ross will now play either Douglas or Carbery in the quarter final.
Carbery Rangers 0-17 St Vincent's 0-09 League 25-07-10
Ross senior team had a useful league outing against St Vincent’s on Sunday evening winning by 17 points to 9.
Carbery Rangers 4-08    St Nicks 1-06 League 09-07-10
Ross senior footballers travelled to Baltimore for a league game with Ilen Rovers on Friday evening and after a very even game the honours were shared on a final score of Ilen Rovers 3-7 Carbery Rangers 1-13.
Carbery Rangers 4-08    St Nicks 1-06 League 09-07-10

Carbery Rangers senior team travelled to Cork to play St Nicks in a league game and came away with a good victory by 4-8 to 1-6.
Carbery Rangers 0-15      Na Piarsaigh 0-04 Championship   27 -06-10

Carbery Rangers senior footballers have made it to the next round of the championship after defeating Na Piarsaigh fairly comfortably in Bandon on Sunday evening. Ross were after two defeats and needed to get back to winning ways if they were to be still involved in the championship.

Rangers started well and had a goal chance early on, a couple of wides were also registered before slotting over three points in as many minutes, two from placed balls taken by John Hayes and one from play by Seamus Hayes. Then followed two magnificent points from Michéal O’Sullivan both from the 50 meter range. John had one from play, while James Fitzpatrick slotted over a free and also one from play. In between John had a fisted effort over the cross bar to leave Rangers ahead at the break 9 points to 1.

Na Piarsaigh had the advantage of the breeze for the second period and a strong challenge was expected from them, but it was the Ross boys who took over and Seamus registered two early points, while Brian Shanahan came forward from the centre back position to score a fine point. Na Piarsaigh had their second point of the match in the eight minute but this was cancelled out by a fine point from Alan Jennings from a tight angle. John Hayes had another point at the three quarter stage. The scores dried up in the final phase and Ross had one final point from the boot of Maurice Moore to give Ross a 15 points to 4 win.
Carbery Rangers 0-09      Ballincollig 3-09 Championship   18 -06-10

Carbery Rangers senior footballers were defeated in the championship by Ballincollig on a score of 3-09 to 9 points in Brinny, on Friday evening last. Ross received an early blow with the concession of a goal in the first minute and faced an uphill battle from the very start. Ross replied well and were on level terms after ten minutes, after scoring 3 fine points and were leading by 2 points before conceding 2 points to the opposition to go in at the break on level terms.

Ross were first to score in the second half, but in the fifth minute the game took a major turn when Ballincollig got past the defence for their second goal. Ross did reply with a point but it was to be their last score until the last five minutes when they got their third and final score of the match. In between Ballincollig scored another goal and four points as the Rangers were finding it difficult to break down a very solid defence.

Ross have one final attempt at the championship when they play Na Piarsaigh in Bandon this Sunday evening at 7pm. It will be difficult to get moral going again after this latest defeat but the lads are quite capable of turning around their season and hopefully they will have a big input in the championship for the rest of the year.

Carbery Rangers 0-08 St Finbarr's 1-09 Championship   16 -05-10
Carbery Rangers senior footballers played St Finbarr’s in the first round of the championship in Bandon on Sunday last and were defeated 1-9 to 8 points. This was a very disappointing result for the Ross men as they had lost out to the same opposition at the same stage last year. In a low scoring first half Ross found it difficult to get into championship mode and were behind at the break by two points. In a much more up tempo second half Ross came more into the game and had a period of dominance in play, but they did not register it on the score board. With the game evenly balanced Rangers conceded a goal with six minutes remaining to give the city side the edge and it proved to much of a hurdle for Ross as time was not on their side. Next up for the Rangers is a meeting with Ballincollig for the right to advance to the next round.

Carbery Rangers 0-11 Clonakilty 0-05 Keller Shield    11 -04-10
Carbery Rangers Senior team won the Liam Granger Cup final on Sunday last when they defeated Clonakilty at Rosscarbery. The game also carried league points so it was a good outing for the Rangers. Ross were without a few of the regular starting fifteen but served up a polished performance to take the cup and were full value for their 11 points to 5 victory.
Carbery Rangers 2-10 Dohoneys 2-10 Keller Shield    28 -03-10

Carbery Rangers senior team were back in action again last weekend when they entertained Dohenys in a league encounter in Ardagh on Sunday morning. Ross were short a good few of their championship team but their replacements were well up for it and led at the break 1-07 to 4 points, thanks to a Liam Leahy goal. Dohenys scored two goals in the second half which brought them back into the game. Seamus Hayes scored a goal from the penalty spot after Daniel Kelly had been fouled in the large parellellogram. The sides were level with ten minutes remaining, but a point each was all both teams could add on in a close and exciting finish with a final score of 2-10 each.

Carbery Rangers 0-16 Nemo Rangers 2-07 Keller Shield    28-02-10
Carbery Rangers 0-16 Nemo Rangers 2-07 Tadgh Crowley Cup Final     28-02-10
Carbery Rangers Senior team won the Tadgh Crowley cup with a good victory over Nemo Rangers in Clonakilty on Sunday last. Ross played against the wind in the first half and were level at the break, despite conceding a goal earl on. Much was expected from the Ross men in the second period and they duly obliged, giving a great display and finishing off some lovely passing movements, scoring some cracking points to build up a six point lead before Nemo scored their second goal in injury time from a free kick and it made for some nervy moments but the Ross boys held out to win 0-16 to 2-07.
Carbery Rangers 1-12 Castlehaven 1-08 Tadgh Crowley Cup      21-02-10
Carbery Rangers senior team had a good win over Castlehaven in the semi final of the Tadgh Crowley cup. After a poor start that had them trailing by 7 points early on in the game Ross gradually came into the game and played an excellent second half and progressed to the final with a 1-12 to 1-08 win.
Carbery Rangers 0-18 Ilen Rovers 0-12 Tadgh Crowley Cup     07-02-10
Carbery Rangers senior team got off to a good start to the season when they defeated old rivals Ilen Rovers in the Tadgh Crowley cup first round game played in Ardagh last Sunday. Ross played with the wind advantage in the first half and built up a six point lead at the break. In the second period Ross held that lead and ran out winners by 18 points to 12.

2009
Carbery Rangers 1-09 Clonakilty 0-09 Kelleher Shield Final 2009      18-10-09

Carbery Rangers senior footballers were crowned league champions when they defeated county champions and near neighbours Clonakilty in the final of the Kelleher Shield, played in Dunmanway last Sunday. The Ross men had to field without three of their championship starting team, and the loss of competitive action over the past few months was expected to give the edge to their opponents, who are still involved in the Munster championship after their recent county championship success.

It was Clon who scored first but that lead only lasted for a short while before Declan Hayes and John O’Rourke combined to put Seamus Hayes through for a brilliant goal and Ross were never to be led again as they dominated proceedings for the remainder of the half. Indeed they were also unlucky not to score a couple of more goals as they pushed forward. At the other end Maurice Moloney was in superb form stopping a penalty and another point blank save to deny the Clon men a way back into the game. Ross led at the break by 1-05 to 2 points thanks to points from Seamus (3) Michael Mennis (1) and Johnny Murphy (1).

In the second period the county champions fought their way back into contention and reduced the lead down to 2 points. Ross picked it up again and second half scores from John Hayes (3) and Brian Shanahan (1) put them ahead at the final whistle on a score line of 1-09 to 9 points. This was Carbery Rangers first competitive senior final victory since joining the senior ranks and was a tremendous achievement for the club, holding the current county champions to a single point from play in the process. The Kelleher Shield Trophy was presented to team captain Seamus Hayes by county board Represintive James O’Neill after the game. Seamus thanked his fellow players and panellists for the amount of work they put in, also to the selectors Johnny Murphy, Mick Connolly, Jeremy Murphy and the Carbery Rangers officers and backroom team before wishing Clonakilty the best of luck in their quest for further honours in the Munster championship.

Star Report

Victory a huge boost to Rangers

By Cois Farraige Saturday October 24th, 2009

Carbery Rangers 1-9

Clonakilty   0-09

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Clonakilty’s bid to add the Kelleher Shield, senior football league title, to the championship crown came unstuck in misty Dunmanway on Sunday last when a fired-up Carbery Rangers deservedly won their first-ever senior title, a sparkling display of attacking football by outstanding captain, Séamus Hayes, being central to their single-goal victory.
Hayes proved much too lively for a variety of Clon markers throughout the game, scoring 1-3 from play. The vital goal that separated the sides at the finish came as early as the third minute, when a swift Ross attack found the elusive Hayes in acres of space and he made no mistake with a rocket from close range.

From then on it was catch-up for Clon, who started without five of their championship winning side but introduced four of them during the hour in a futile attempt to haul back the rampant Rangers.

Clon did have chances to raise badly-needed green flags but found Rangers’ goalie, Maurice Moloney, in unbeatable form. Clon, playing with the wind and rain but outrun and outfootballed from the very start, found themselves five points in arrears, 1-5 to 0-3, by the 27th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but, to the delight of the Rangers’ supporters, Moloney went full stretch to tip Colin O’Donovan’s shot around the post. O’Donovan then missed the resulting 45.

Seven minutes into the second half, with Clon at last showing some urgency, sub Padraig Griffin cut through at an angle only to have his rasping shot brilliantly saved by Moloney. Six minutes from time, with Clon still five points in arrears, the Rangers’ defence was finally prised open but this time
Griffin
shot badly wide from close range.

In truth anything less than a Ross win would have proved an injustice as they were by far the better side, showing great fitness and appetite for a team knocked out of the championship last July.

The statistics tell the tale with Rangers scoring 1-6 from play while Clon managed only a single white flag from play throughout the hour. Five Ross players shared the scoring while Clon depended on two players for eight of their points and four of their forwards failed to register scores.

ON TOP

Rangers got on top from the word go, against the breeze and rain, and with the Hayes brothers, Séamus and John, Johnny Murphy and John O’Rourke, proving much too lively for a very lethargic Clon defence, they hit the front with Hayes’s goal, after Colin O’Donovan had put Clon in front from a free. With Mícheál O’Sullivan and James Fitzpatrick winning midfield and Brian Shanahan and Mike Mennis excelling in the half back line, it was all Ross in the opening quarter and points from Mennis and Séamus Hayes stretched the lead to four points before Clon began to make an effort.

Colm Calnan pointed a free, 1-2 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter, but back came John Hayes with a quick response. In the 17th minute Rangers cut through but Johnny Murphy’s rasper scraped outside the post.

Séamus Hayes, rampant at full forward, pointed, followed by a free from Johnny Murphy and Rangers were six to the good. Colin O’Donovan had Clon’s sole point from play and then came the penalty when Nigel Hayes, one of the few Clon successes at wing back, was pulled down but Moloney did the needful in goal.

Colin O’Donovan then had an attempt at goal saved and the first half closed with David O’Regan pointing a Clon 45. It was 1-5 to 0-4 in Rangers’ favour at the break, a fair reflection of their first-half dominance.

Clon began to introduce their missing players after the break and when Conor McManus switched to midfield, his work rate, plus a huge improvement from Timmy Anglin, saw Clon grasp the initiative but they found it hard to penetrate a Ross defence in which Mennis, Shanahan, Seán Hayes and Gearóid Ryan were outstanding.

It was Rangers who scored first, a John Hayes point from a free. Then came Moloney’s great save from
Griffin
but fitter Clon were well on top now and Colin O’Donovan pointed a free, followed by two superb frees from Colm Calnan.

The lead was down to two points entering the last quarter, 1-6 to 0-7, and it looked as if Clon’s fitness and match practice would carry the day, even against the elements, but Rangers had other ideas and with Brian Shanahan and the Hayes brothers outstanding, they regained their momentum. Points from John Hayes, play and free, and Shanahan re-opened the five point gap with ten minutes left.

MEAN

Clon went all out in search of scores but found the Rangers’ defence in a mean mood and
Griffin
’s bad miss epitomised Clon’s anxiety on the day. Clon did manage two pointed frees, from O’Donovan and Calnan, in the closing minutes but Rangers were not going to be denied, Hayes’s goal still between the sides at the finish as it ended 1-9 to 0-9.

Referee: Donal McCarthy, Dohenys.

The giant Kelleher Shield was presented to Rangers’ captain, Séamus Hayes, by County Board officer, James O’Neill, and Ross were delighted not only to become the first team to lower the colours of the county champions but to take home their first senior title. They were the first to wish Clon better luck in the
Munster
club championship on 8th November against the Kerry champions.

Scorers – Carbery Rangers: Séamus Hayes 1-3, John Hayes 0-3, 0-2 frees, Johnny Murphy 0-1 free, Brian Shanahan and Mike Mennis 0-1 each. Clonakilty: Colin O’Donovan 0-4, 0-3 frees, Colm Calnan 0-4 frees, David O’Regan 0-1, a 45.

Carbery Rangers 2-14  St Finbarr's 1-09                 K/S    30 -08-09
The Carbery Rangers senior team played their final league game of the season on Saturday evening when they recorded a good victory over Glenville on a score of 2-14 to 1-09. Carbery Rangers have a total of 15 points and lead the table at the moment while a number of other clubs have games to play before the final league table will be finalized.

Carbery Rangers 4-13  St Finbarr's 1-14                 K/S    13-08-09

The senior footballers traveled to Cork to play St Finbarr’s in the league and came away with a 4-13 to 1-14 win in a high scoring encounter. Team: Maurice Moloney, James Cussen, Sean Hayes, Stephen Hicks, Gearóid Ryan, Anthony Roche, Stephen Murray, James Fitzpatrick, John McCarthy, Brian Shanahan, Declan Hayes, Padraig Hodnett, Niall Hayes, Seamus Hayes, Enda Favier. Subs: Michéal Kelly, Liam Leahy and James Hicks

Carbery Rangers 1-09  Douglas  2-08                 K/S    25 -07-09

The senior team played Douglas away in the league on Saturday and were defeated by 2-08 to 1-09.

Carbery Rangers 0-11 Castlehaven 0-14     Senior Championship  11-07-09

Carbery Rangers made their exit from the 2009 County Senior Football Championship on Saturday last in Dunmanway, when they bowed out to local rivals Castlehaven on a score line of 14 points to 11. This was the first Championship tie between the teams since Carbery Rangers reached senior ranks and a close encounter was expected. With extremely bad weather throughout the day the match went ahead as the pitch withstood the rains best efforts and was in good condition. The wind advantage was in favour of Ross in the first half but they failed to capitalise on this as it was the haven who led at half time by 7 points to 6. Five of those Ross points were placed kicks with only one score coming from play. Midway through the first half Ross keeper Maurice Moloney made a fine save to deny the Haven a good goal chance. The task was huge in the second period and the Rangers responded well and went ahead by 0-10 to 0-09 at the three-quarter mark. With the game now truly up for grabs it was the Haven who made the most of their opportunities, as then took over and scored five unanswered points before Ross got on the score sheet again. Despite some tremendous pressure and two goal attempts on their quest to level matters, time ran out and with it our participation in the championship. Despite playing a good second half the game was probably lost in the first period when playing with the wind advantage we failed to make it count on the scoreboard. Team: Maurice Moloney, Enda Favier, Seán Hayes, Padraig Hodnett, Gearóid Ryan, Brian Shanahan, Stephen Murray, Michéal O’Sullivan, John McCarthy, Johnny Murphy, James Fitzpatrick, Kevin McMahon, Declan Hayes, Seamus Hayes, John Hayes. Subs: Stephen Hicks, Michéal Kelly, John O’Rourke, Anthony Roche.

Carbery Rangers 1-11 Ballincollig 1-09     Senior Championship Replay 20-06-09

Carbery Rangers senior team were in action on Saturday evening in Newcestown against Ballincollig in the replay of the Cork county championship. It was a big change weather-wise from the drawn encounter which was played in a downpour. Ballincollig started well and had two points on the scoreboard in just 3 minutes however they were only to add one more in the remainder of the half as Ross powered their way into the game and picked off 8 points to give them a comfortable half time lead. Once again it was Ballincollig who got the first two points and like the first half Ross took over again and when Seamus Hayes found the back of the net it put Rangers in a commanding position and despite a late rally Ross held out for a deserved win in a final score of 1-11 to 1-09.

This was a big game and a huge test for Ross and they responded magnificently to the challenge, in the drawn encounter Rangers had played against fourteen men for a lot of the game and many thought that they had left it behind them on that occasion. But how they proved what a fine football team they are as they dominated proceedings for most of the game, with top class displays from goalie Maurice Moloney who saved a penalty along with a few more vital stops, full back Sean Hayes had a great outing as did centre back Brian Shanahan, they were well served at either side by Michéal Kelly, Stephen Hicks Padraig Hodnett and Stephen Murray.

In the middle Michéal O’Sullivan gave a vintage display and was helped by man of the match John McCarthy. James Fitzpatrick scored a fine first half point while Johnny Murphy has a new lease of life in his transition from the backs up to the forward line. Kevin McMahon was back to his best on the wing making several dashing runs, in the full forward line the Hayes’s, Declan, Seamus and John are a handful for any back line.

And what an impact John O’Rourke made when introduced scoring one of the best points of the game after a fine solo run. Gearoid Ryan made a huge impression in the backline when he came on. This was a highly impressive performance and credit must go to selectors Johnny Murphy, Mick Connolly and Jeremy Murphy for their part in it. Next up it is Castlehaven and another display like this one should make it a cracking game.

Carbery Rangers 1-14  Newcestown  3-08                 K/S    14 -06-09

Ross senior team travelled to Newcestown to play the home side in a league fixture on Sunday last. Ross went into a five point lead in the first quarter before the home side reduced the margin to 1 mid way through. Just before the break Ross scored a goal to restore the earlier lead of five points. In the second half Newcestown took over and raced into a two point lead after ten minutes. Ross rallied again and with time almost up held a 3 point advantage but in a last ditch effort the home side crashed home a goal to make matters all square at the final whistle 1-14 to 3-08.

Carbery Rangers 0-13  Castlehaven  0-11                 K/S    30 -05-09

It was off to the black field on Saturday evening to play Castlehaven and unlike the Nemo match it was our opponents who made the better start racing into a 6 points to 2 lead. Ross came with a good fight back to the first half and trailed by a single point at the break. The second period had Ross upping the pace and despite a number of wides the eventfully took over and ran out winners on a final score of 13 points to 11.

Carbery Rangers 2-09  Nemo Rangers  1-09                 K/S    26-05-09

Carbery Rangers senior team played two Keller shield games over the past week. First up it was a home game against Nemo Rangers on Tuesday evening. Ross got off to the perfect start and had scored 2 goals and a point inside the first 5 minutes. Nemo gradually came more into the game before the break and a penalty at the start of the second half had them right back into it. However the Ross boys played very well in the closing period and ran out deserving winners on a score of 2-09 to 1-09.

Carbery Rangers 0-07 Ballincollig 0-07     Senior Championship 17-05-09

Carbery Rangers and Ballincollig played out an exiting draw in the senior championship game in Newcestown on Sunday last. Conditions were poor and the first half was played in a downpour Ross had wind advantage and scored 2 early points,  Ballincollig came more into the game and had the match all square after 12 minutes However from here to the end of the half Ross played their best football and held a 3 point advantage at the break. Rangers scored the first point in the second half while Ballincollig with the advantage of the elements gradually clawed their way back into the game to level matters with 5 minutes to play. We then had an exchange of points before the final whistle which left the score 7 points each and it will take another day to resolve the outcome. `

Ross will take heart from the performance of their young players Michéal Kelly, Stephen Hicks, Padraig Hodnett and John O’Rourke who all played well in their first year of senior football championship. The back’s put in a fine effort under difficult conditions and with a bit of improvement up front from the forwards Ross can go on and advance to the next round. Team Maurice Moloney, Michéal Kelly, Sean Hayes, Stephen Hicks, Padraig Hodnett, Brian Shanahan, Gearoid Ryan, Michéal O’Sullivan, John McCarthy, John O’Rourke, James Fitzpatrick, Kevin McMahon, Declan Hayes, Seamus Hayes, John Hayes. Subs Johnny Murphy, Michael Mennis and Niall Hayes

Carbery Rangers 0-07 St Finbarr's 0-07     Senior Championship 05-05-09
Carbery Rangers senior footballers were defeated by St Finbarr’s in the first round of the championship in Newcestown last Tuesday evening. Ross played against the stiff breeze in the first half and started brightly, scoring a goal mid way thru. At half time Ross trailed by a point and looked in good shape with the aid of the elements to come in the second half, but it was the Barr’s who got off to a flying start scoring a goal and a point in the first few minutes and changed the complexion of the game. Ross took a quarter of an hour before they got their first score of the half and after some fine play reduced the lead down to a point with time running out and try as they might they could not get the equalizing score. Finally it was the Barr’s who got the last score and advanced to the next round on a final score of 1-10 to 1-08. Carbery Rangers will now play Ballincollig on this Sunday in Newcestown at 3.30pm in the championship.

The senior team entertained Ilen Rovers at Ardagh in the Keller Shield game on Sunday both sides know each other well over the years and there is never to much between them, and this proved to be the way again as they finished level on 10 points each. Ross held a single point advantage at the break and in a second period that was evenly contested the visitors went ahead as we entered the final minutes before Ross scored the equaliser in a game that was beneficial to both teams as they face into championship action shortly.

Carbery Rangers 1-16  St Nicks  2-08                 K/S    05-04-09

Carbery Rangers senior team had a victory over St Nicks in the Keller shield game played in Ross on Sunday evening. In the first half Ross played some lovely football and scored 11 points in the process, however the concession of two goals meant that their lead was only a single point at the break In the second period Ross scored a goal and 7 points while holding their opponents to just 4 points and were deserving winners on a score of 1-16 to 2-08. Next week the seniors play Ilen Rovers in Ross.

Carbery Rangers 0-10 Clonakilty  0-10                 K/S    08-03-09

Carbery Rangers senior team collected their first point of the 2009 Keller shield when they finished all square with near neighbours Clonakilty at Ardagh on Sunday last. Ross played with the wind in the first half and looked to be in trouble at the break trailing by 8 points to 4. But a strong second half performance; particularly from team captain Seamus Hayes who scored seven points, gave Rangers a one point lead approaching the end as Clon rallied once more to score the equalizer. Final score 10 points each.

Carbery Rangers 0-08 Dohenys  0-11                 K/S    26-02-09

Carbery Rangers senior footballers had their first completive game of the season on Thursday night last in Cloughduv against Dohenys in the Keller Shield. In a fine open contest Ross were defeated by 11 points to 8. Ross had to field without a few of their regular players and were slow to settle giving their opponents a 3 point start after ten minutes. Ross then came more into the game and scored the next four points before Dohenys established their 3 point advantage at the break. The second period began with a instant exchange of points, then Dohenys took control and built up a 5 point advantage after 12 minutes, and despite holding their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the game Ross could only come within 3 points of them at the final whistle. Team Maurice Moloney, Gearoid Ryan, Sean Hayes, Enda Favier, Stephen Hicks, Michael Mennis, Stephen Murray, John Lawlor, John McCarthy, Paudie Hodnett, Alan Jennings, Brian Shanahan, Declan Hayes, Seamus Hayes, Niall Hayes. Carbery Rangers 0-12 Glenville 0-07                  K/S    13-09-08

The senior team made a return to competitive action on Saturday when they travelled to Glenville to take on the home side in a Kelleher shield game and came away with a victory on a score of 0-12 to 0-07.

Carbery Rangers 1-06 Nemo Rangers 2-11 Championship 22-06-08
Carbery Rangers senior team bowed out of the championship in Enniskeane on Sunday evening loosing out to county champions Nemo Rangers on a score of 2-11 to 1-06. For forty minutes Ross were giving as good as their highly fancied opponents could throw at them and were on equal terms but the loss of three players from their last championship game was to take its toll. Luck was certainly not on our side as the woodwork was to deny Ross on a couple of occasions when a certain goal looked likely but it was not to be. It is only five years since Ross played a West Cork junior final at the same venue and quite a few of this team played on that occasion. They have played a lot of football since then taking us all over Ireland in the process. They have now established themselves in the senior grade and on this performance they proved that they can mix it with the best of them.

Nemo Rangers 2-11   Carbery Rangers 1-6
Concede goals to Nemo Rangers and the task of beating them becomes nearly impossible. Unfortunately for brave Carbery Rangers, they conceded two in the first half when Nemo were playing against the strong wind and despite all their heart and bravery afterwards there was really no way the Ross men were going to survive this battle of the Rangers.
This third round senior football championship game in Enniskeane on Sunday last was dominated by a strong wing which made it a game of two halves. Ross had the advantage in the first moiety in front of a large crowd and despite having to play without some key injured players, includingCork player, Kevin McMahon, they got off to a good start and John Hayes had the white flag flying within a minute. Hayes looked in fine fettle whenever he was in possession but in the second half the supply of ball was nearly non-existent.
Tackling hard from the start and crowding the Nemo player in possession, Ross looked well up for this clash but were struck a devastating blow as early as the third minute when Paul Kerrigan raced 40m to crash a great shot to the Ross net. It was ominous for the West Cork men but they struck back immediately with a goal of their own when David Creedon and John Hayes combined to set up Séamus Hayes for a smashing green flag.
It was tough, hard-hitting football with referee, Anthony Cummins of Ballymartle, in a very lenient mood as regards tackling and we had to wait until the 11th minute for the next score, a point from James Masters to level the game. Masters lined out at centre forward and oozed class when in possession but that wasn’t too often in the first half.
The game hit stalemate for the next ten minutes with no score being registered and the tackles going in hard and fast. With Mícheál ‘Haulie’ O'Sullivan in superb form at midfield, it was Ross who did most of the attacking with the wind but, unfortunately, they kicked a number of wides from good positions when scores were needed. Eventually, with Haulie O’Sullivan doing the spadework, John Hayes kicked a point in the 20th minute and converted a free a minute later.
The lead was short-lived as just when it seemed that Ross might build a half-time lead, Nemo struck for their second goal in the 23rd minute. Gearóid O’Shea, doing well at centre back, and Alan Cronin, quiet in the first half at full forward, combined to put James Masters through on goal and he made no mistake from 13m.
It was Nemo in front by a single point and all the good work for Ross by Haulie O'Sullivan, John Lawlor, the Hayes brothers, Gearóid Ryan, James Fitzpatrick and Declan Hayes had come to naught. When impressive Cork minor Barry O’Driscoll and the accurate Paul Kerrigan (free) added points, the city men were three to the good and one feared for Ross’s survival. A point by John Hayes closed the first half scoring and it was Nemo in front by 2-3 to 1-4.
Despite playing into the strong wind in the second half, it was Ross who got off to a good start again and two fine points from Séamus and Dec Hayes levelled the score within five minutes, much to the delight of the large Ross following. But it was to prove a false dawn and the losers were not to score again as Nemo took a tight grip on the game.
With Maurice McCarthy and Martin Cronin gaining control at midfield, Alan Cronin wandering out from full forward to good effect, and James Masters, Barry O’Driscoll and Paul Kerrigan giving a fine display of kicking, Nemo took control. O’Driscoll opened the floodgates when he put Nemo back in front in the 39th minute and Masters, after missing an easy free, converted a 45. He added another from play and the third quarter ended with a lovely combined move putting Alan Cronin in for another white flag. It was 2-7 to 1-6 at that stage and Ross were clearly struggling.
There was no let-up from Nemo in the last quarter as their half back line, with Brian O’Regan prominent, put up the shutters and Derek Kavanagh gave nothing away at full back. Barry O’Driscoll kicked another lovely point and then Kerrigan landed two from out on the wing as Ross could only answer with individual bursts that were quickly snuffed out by the alert and hard-tackling Nemo defence.
To their credit, Ross battled gamely to the final whistle but they had run out of ideas long before the finish and the best they could do was for Séamus Hayes to force a fine save from the Nemo goalie, Brian Morgan, and a cracking shot that rebounded off the crossbar.
It fell to the promising Paul Kerrigan to close the scoring, 2-11 to 1-6, and on this form it will take an exceptional effort to stop the champions from recording a first-ever four in a row in the county championship. Next round opponents are Castlehaven.
Scorers – Nemo Rangers: Paul Kerrigan 1-4, 0-1 free, James masters 1-3, 0-1 45, Barry O’Driscoll 0-3, Alan Cronin 0-1. Carbery Rangers: Séamus Hayes 1-1, John Hayes 0-4, 0-1 free, Declan Hayes 0-1.
Nemo Rangers: Brian Morgan, Niall Geary, Derek Kavanagh, Ciarán O’Shea, Seán McKeown, Gearóid O’Shea, Brian O’Regan, Martin Cronin, Maurice McCarthy, David Niblock, James Masters, Seán O’Brien, Barry O’Driscoll, Alan Cronin, Paul Kerrigan.
Carbery Rangers: Maurice Moloney, Enda Favier, Seán Hayes, Johnny Murphy, Gearóid Ryan, Patrick White, Stephen Murray, Mícheál O’Sullivan, James Fitzpatrick, Brian Shanahan, David Creedon, Séamus Hayes, John Hayes. Subs: Mark Ronan, Michael Mennis.

Carbery Rangers 0-12 St Vincents 0-07      K/S       05-06-08
Carbery Rangers senior team played St Vincents in the Kelleher shield on Thursday evening last. Once again were short a few regulars due to injury and it gave a chance to a few players to claim a place for the championship. In a tight first half Ross held a one point lead. The second period Rangers upped the tempo and pulled away to record a 12 points to 7 victory.

Carbery Rangers 3-06 Bantry 0-12     West Cork Championship      01-06-08

Carbery Rangers senior team played Bantry in the semi final of the West Cork Championship on Sunday last in Skibbereen.Ross had a few injury problems going into this match and started without a number of regular players. Two early goals and three points all from John Hayes gave Ross a four point lead approaching the break whenCork player Kevin McMahon received a major injury and the game had a extended half time break while the injury was being attended. The second period saw Bantry come more into the game as the injury to Kevin seemed to affect the Ross players and the opposition raced into a two point lead.  The Ross boys dug deep as the game approached and after a few well taken points Ross drew level again as they started to dominate again and sub Maurice Moore converted a penalty to give Carbery Rangers a deserved victory and so qualify for the final. Final score Carbery Rangers 3-6 Bantry 0-12. We wish Kevin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon again.

Carbery Rangers 2-07 Carbery 0-09     West Cork Championship      11-05-08
Carbery Rangers and divisional side Carbery kicked off the West Cork senior football championship on Sunday last in Skibbereen. Ross were short a few regulars in the starting fifteen and after a slow start they gradually matched the divisional side in a even first half. Ross made changes in the second period and were rewarded with two goals that put them in the driving seat and Rangers finally ran out winners on a score of Carbery Rangers 2-07 Carbery 0-09 and now qualify for the semi final against Bantry.

Carbery Rangers 1-11 Dohenys 1-18     K/S                 04-05-08
Carbery Rangers suffered their second defeat in the Kelleher shield on Sunday evening when they went down to Dohenys on a score line of 1-15 to 1-11 in Dunmanway.  Ross were short a few regulars from their usual starting line up and came under pressure from the home team. Dohenys found the net shortly after the match starting and by half time Ross were trailing 0-6 to 1-07. Ross had the first point of the second period but then it was all Dohenys and they had eight unanswered points as they dominated the game. Rangers finished well with a goal and four points but it was not enough as time ran out.

Carbery Rangers 0-13 Bishopstown 0-5
 Championship 18-04-08
The senior championship campaign for 2008 kicked off for Carbery Rangers on Friday evening at Charlie Hurley Park in Bandon, when they faced Bishopstown in the first round. It was our sixth time meeting a city team in the past twelve months in the championship, and it proved to be a fruitful one.

After a tough campaign last season when they were drawn into a relegation battle, it was interesting to see how they would perform and the lessons learned along the way. Ross started well and had a few early points on the board; however their dominance on the field of play was not reflected in the half time lead of 5 points to 2.  A tough struggle was anticipated in the second period if we were to advance. This was heightened as Ross had played with a strong wind advantage in the first half, and had lost the service of Under 21 star James Fitzpatrick thru injury.

The second half started with a point for the city men before the Rangers clicked into gear and gave a sizzling performance on a cold and wet evening. The backs were coping with anything Bishopstown had to offer and Ross were well on top in the middle of the park as the forwards found the range with accuracy. This half saw the score board changing regularly in favor of the Ross men and the memory of the titanic struggle for survival last year was laid to rest long before the final whistle sounded, giving a 13 points to 5 victory to the Rangers. Ross can now concentrate on football knowing that senior status is assured and who knows how much can be achieved as they go in search of further success.

Carbery Rangers 3-12 Na Piarsaigh 2-09      K/S       11-04-08
Carbery Rangers followed up their victory over Clonakilty with another win over Na Piarsaigh in the Kelleher shield on Friday evening in Cork . Rangers had wind advantage in the first half and thanks to goals from John Hayes, Niall Hayes and David Creedon they built up a 3-07 to 0-03 lead at the break. In the second period Na Piarsaig chipped away at the Ross lead with a few well taken points and when they scored two goals in quick succession they put it up to the visitors but Ross responded well scoring 3 points to win on a score line of 3-12 to 2-09.

Carbery Rangers 0-12 Clonakilty 1-07        K/S         06-04-08
Carbery Rangers had a two point victory over near neighbors Clonakilty in the Kelleher Shield game played at Brinny on Sunday evening last. Playing against the wind Ross dominated the early part of the half but Clon rallied just before the break scoring a goal which left the sides even at half time. In the second half Ross continued to play well and in the end Ross were deserving of their first senior football victory over Clonakilty on a score line of 0-12 to 1-07.

Carbery Rangers 0-10 Mayfield 1-06          K/S          30-03-08

The Senior Team travelled to Mayfield on Sunday last to play Mayfield in their 3rd game of the Kelleher Shield. The conditions were poor but the game was allowed to go ahead after the referee’s inspection of the pitch. First half was even enough with Ross scoring 6 points to Mayfields 1 goal and 4 points. The second half followed a similar pattern with very little between the two teams. Ross were fortunate to come away winning by the narrowest of margins to gain a further two points in the county league. The presence of RTE cameras, which were following the fortunes of the Mayfield team, added to the occasion on a wintry afternoon for football.

22-03-08

The Senior Team took part in a tournament organized by UCC in the farm on Saturday last. Other teams who participated were UCC and Hospital, Co. Limerick . Ross played UCC in the first game and took the points. In the second game, Ross comfortably accounted for Hospital, which ensured overall victory on the day. Panel included Maurice Moloney, Micheal Kelly, Anthony Roche, James Cussen, Stephen Murray, Enda Favier, Pat Whyte, Stephen Hicks, Gearoid Ryan, Johnny Murphy, Michael Mennis, Micheal O Sullivan, David Creedon, John McCarthy, Mark Ronan, Niall Hayes, Seamus Hayes, Maurice Moore, James Hicks, Brian Shanahan.

Carbery Rangers 0-14 O'Donovan Rossa 0-09
         K/S     16-03-2008

Carbery Rangers had a 0-14 to 0-09 win over O’Donovan Rossa in the senior Kelleher Shield league game played at Ardagh on Sunday evening last. Rangers had to field without our under 21 players as they have a game on Monday and just before the start Ross were dealt another blow as both Seamus and Sean Hayes were injured in the warm up and Ross had to play without them also. We had Rangers leading by a point in a even enough first quarter, before Ross upped the tempo combining to score four more good points while Skibb replied with two to give Ross an interval lead of 0-08 to 0-05 In the second half Rangers defense stood firm as the Skibb men piled on the pressure and some good scores by the home side gave them a deserved win and our first brace of points in the currant league.

Carbery Rangers 0-10 St Finbarrs 0-11
            K/S            09-03-08

Carbery Rangers senior team made their debut in the 2008 Kelleher Shield on Sunday morning away to St Finbarrs. In a game that could have been won, or at least drawn, the game ended in a one point defeat for Ross. In a first half that was evenly contested Ross scored some lovely points, and after holding the Barr’s to equal scores it looked good. Ross got the first point in the second period but it was the Barr’s who played the best football in the first ten minutes while the next period saw Ross well on top but they did not make it count on the scoreboard and paid the price as the Barr’s scored a late point to clinch victory on a score of Carbery Rangers 0-10 St Finbarrs 0-11.
