Rosscarbery 3-12 Castlehaven 1-09 Championship Football 21-07-10

Rosscarbery U14 footballers began their championship campaign with a good win over Castlehaven in Leap. Ross had a good start when Danny Reynolds found Robert Hegarty with a lovely pass he raced through for a fine goal to open the scoring. Robert was again on target scoring a point from play before John Hodnett took over the scoring duty and he contributed 6 points from play and placed balls before the break to give the Ross boys a 1-7 to 1-4 interval lead. The Haven goal coming from the penalty spot. Ross goalie Shane O’Sullivan also made a fine save before the break. In the second period Ross had an early goal from John Hodnett after Danny Reynolds effort was blocked. More points followed for Ross while the backs were well in command limiting the Haven to 5 points in the second half. As the game was coming to a conclusion Cian Daly found John with a perfect pass and he made no mistake hitting the back of the net, and Ross were through to the next round on a score of 3-12 to 1-09. The U14 footballers had two games recently the playing a friendly with Kilmurry and a league win over Skibbereen.


Rosscarbery 3-09 Gabriel Og 3-06 Championship Hurling  15-06-10 H League


Rosscarbery U14 hurlers played Gabriel Óg in the championship in Leap and after an exciting hours play won by 3-9 to 3-6. Ross built up a 6 point lead at the half way stage thanks to a goal and a point from Jerry O’Riardon along with one from Jack O’Donoghue and 3 pointed frees from David O’Donovan. In the second period Gabriel Óg started brightly with 2 goals and mid way through the half they went ahead by two points when their third goal arrived, once again Ross regrouped and Jack added a goal and two points to his tally. David was also on target again while John Hodnett came forward to score a fine point, but the decisive score of the match came from the hurley of William Allshire when he found the net and Ross advanced to the next round. In U14 hurling the Rosscarbery boys played Grenagh  in a league game at home and were well beaten by a much stronger outfit. Rosscarbery 3-06 Timoleague 2-04 Hurling League Semi-Final    24-01-10

Rosscarbery under 14 hurlers played the final of the 2009 league on Sunday last in Ardagh, against Timoleague and won on a score of 3-6 to 2-4. Ross trailed at the break by two points and in a close second half Ross gradually built up a 5 point gap, before Timoleague finished in a flourish scoring a goal and a point to leave just 1 between them with time almost up. However Ross responded brilliantly and scored a goal just before the final whistle to give them a well deserved win and the league title. Rosscarbery 6-04 Mizen Rovers 3-05  Hurling League Semi-Final    18-12-09

On Friday night last the U14 hurlers travelled to Castlehaven to take on Mizen Rovers in the semi final of the league. On a bitterly cold night both sides lined out under lights for the first time. The first half was a very evenly contested affair and when Pat Fitzgerald blew for half time the Rangers led 2-01 to 1-02 . Some astute positional changes by the management yielded great benefits in the second half and the Ross lads scored some great goals. When the final whistle blew the score was 6.04 to 3.05 to the Ross lads. They now face Timoleague in the final possibly played over the Christmas period. Rosscarbery under 14 footballers played Clann na nGael in the league semi-final on Sunday last inNewtown winning on a score of 3-07 to 0-05. Ross had 3 first half goals from John Hodnett, Timmy O’Donoghue and William Allshire and led at the break by 6 points. In the second half Ross scored 5 points while holding the opposition scoreless and advancing to the final against Sam Maguire’s on this Thursday night in Dunmanway at 7.30pm. Rosscarbery 2-09 Drimoleague 3-08  Football Championship Final    20-07-09

      Rosscarbery under 14 footballers were in championship action on Monday evening in Union Hall against Drimoleague and after a spirited come back they fell short on a score of 3-8 to 2-9. Ross were trailing by 7 points after the first quarter before they registered their first score. Two more points followed as they fought their way back into the game they then conceded a second goal and on the stroke of half time a third goal was scored to leave Ross trailing 3-5 to 0-3 at the break. Ross had a mountain to climb if they were to make a game of it and how well they responded getting 5 unanswered points, before Maurice Allshire taped home a deserved goal to leave just 3 between them. Drimoleague then scored their first score of the second half and the lead was just down to a one point margin after Austin Keane cracked home a stunning goal. The Ross full back then raced up the field and was denied by the wood work as they chased the lead. Two more points from Drimoleague eased the pressure on them and as Ross tried in vain a single point was all they could achieve and after a gallant come back time ran out on them.         Rosscarbery under 14 hurlers suffered an agonizing one point defeat in the final of the championship when they were defeated by Skibbereen in Union Hall during the week. Ross conceded three first half goals and trailed by six points at the break A spirited second half performance saw them reduce the lead to a single point entering the final minutes and despite some pressure the all important score would not come and Skibbereen ran out winners on a score of 3-05 to 2-07. Ross under 14 hurlers qualified for the West Cork final when they defeated Timoleague on Monday evening in Ardfield. Ross were first to settle and picked off some lovely points before adding a couple of goals before the break and had a 2-5 to 0-1 lead at half time. In the second period Timoleague came more into the game and piled on the pressure but goalie David O’Donovan brought off some fine saves and backs Aidan O’Donovan and Cathal O’Rourke stood firm along with Daniel O’Donovan and Jerry O’Riordan. Midfielder John Hodnett had a fine game and his partner Tadgh O’Mahony scored 1-03 with John Jo Walsh getting 2 goals and Timmy O’Donoghue clocking up 1-4. Inside forwards Danny Reynolds notched up 2 points while William Allshire was always a threat. Ross were deserving winners but flattered at the final score of 4-09 to 1-05. Our under 14 hurlers contested the league final against Bantry on Sunday in Dunmanway. Ross had already defeated Bantry in the Championship final but on this occasion it was the boys from Bantry who came out on top in a score line of 2-08 to 1-06.            Rosscarbery under 14 footballers captured the league title last Sunday in Drimoleague against the home side. It was Drimoleague who opened the scoring with a point however Ross were soon level thanks to a point from Brian Hayes then a long range effort from Matt O’Brien ended up in the net. On the quarter hour mark Brian Hodnett scored a brilliant goal to give Ross a solid lead. From here to the break it was the home side who added 3 unanswered points’s to leave Ross leading 2-01 to 0-04 at the break. Brian Hodnett added 2 further goals and 2 points in the second half and with Sean O’Regan scoring two more points and one from Thomas O’Rourke Ross ran out winners on a score of 4-06 to 1-07.      Rosscarbery 4-10 Dunmanway 6-03 was the final score in a recent league encounter in what was a very good even game with some great attacking football played by both teams. Rosscarbery played in the U14 football championship at Ballinascarthy last Tuesday evening and were heavily defeated by a lively Bandon outfit. The first half saw Bandon well on top and they raced into a 7 point to 2 lead after twenty minutes at which point Ross piled on the pressure and were denied by a double save made by the Bandon goalie that was cleared up field and ended up in the Ross net. Cathal Prendergast received an injury and had to be replaced and Ross conceded another goal just before the break. The U 14 footballers lost out to Drimoleague 8-06 Rosscarbery 4-09. After a bright start Ross let in a few easy goals caused by poor marking and some silly mistakes.        The U14 hurlers made their exit from the championship on Saturday going down to city side St Vincent’s in the county semi final at Bandon. Ross got off to a poor start and were trailing by 6 points after the first quarter. Brian Hodnett opened the scoring for the Ross boys with a fine goal and Michael Hourihan got another soon after. Ross were now playing well and added three points to take the lead. Thomas O’Rourke scored a goal to edge Ross further in front coming up to the break. The concession of a goal just on the stroke of half time unsettled the Ross lads and St Vincent’s scored two valuable goals at the start of the second half making the task that bit harder, Ross were denied with a couple of efforts on goal and tried hard right up to the end before going down eventually on a score of 7-06 to 4-04.           The U14 hurlers have qualified for the County semi-final thanks to a great display by defeating Bride Rovers 4-06 to 1-07 on Saturday last and will now play Passage this weekend. The club would like to thank Bride Rovers for providing refreshments for the team and supporters.

         The U14 West Cork Hurling Final was played recently in Ardagh owing to the original venue being water logged. A highly fancied Bantry side faced up to Rosscarbery, both sides had met in the league and Bantry had a comprehensive win. Pat Fitzgerald (Skibbereen) threw in the sliotar and Ross got off to a flyer and raced into a 2 point lead. Both sides traded scores in a highly entertaining and competitive first quarter. The Ross back line of Patrick Shanahan, Cathal Prendergast, and John Hodnett were particularly impressive at thwarting the Bantry forwards. Brian Hodnett goaled on twenty minutes and Ross midfield of Eamon O’Mahony and Thomas O’Rourke were taking command. Bantry struck the net on the stroke of half time to leave the score 1-03 to 1-02 in favor of Ross. The game restarted in front of a sizeable crowd and both sides had score for score. Paul Shanahan pounced for two goals as Ross increased a lead which they were never to lose. Bantry fought hard but the full back line of Daniel Hodnett and Tim O’Donoghue, stood firm. John Joe Walsh, Tadgh O’Mahony, and Michael Hourihan in the forwards played well and as the game entered the last ten minutes Ross had a point lead. Brian Hayes was very consistent in goal with accurate puck outs. In injury time Bantry were only two points in arrears when the final whistle blew with a score of 3-06 to 2-07 in favor of Ross. Eddie Hayes of Bord na nOg presented the cup to team captain Paul Shanahan.

Rosscarbery  2-14     Clonakilty  1-04        15-06-08    Hurling Championship
On Sunday evening last the U14 hurlers traveled to Ardfield to play Clonakilty in the championship semi final C grade. Both sides had met already in the league and Ross had won a very close contest this promised to be an exhilarating game. From the throw in Clon were first out of the blocks and raced into a three point lead. Eamon O’Mahony and Thomas O’Rourke started to take control at midfield and gradually the Ross lads got into the game. The Clon goalkeeper was in excellent form denying Brian Hodnett’s efforts on numerous occasions. Paul Shanahan struck some superb long range frees and the Rangers took the lead and held a four point advantage at the break. Tim O’Donoghue and Patrick Shanahan shored up the defense and Cathal Prendergast excelled at centre back in the closing down the Clon attack. Ross stretched their lead with some great points and as the game entered the closing stages were well in command. The match finished 2-14 to 1-04 in favor of the Ross lads and set up a West Cork final against a very fancied Bantry side this Wednesday.        On Thursdays evening last the U14 hurlers took on Clondrohid in the league in Newtown. The visitors got off to a lively start and raced into a 3 point lead after eight minutes. Ross gradually got to grips at midfield and two quick goals from full forward Michael Hourihan steadied the home side. The wing backs Daniel Hodnett and John Hodnett were in superb form and Ross had the upper hand at the break leading 3-02 to 0-03. Tadgh O’Mahony had a blistering start to the second half as Ross took command. Clondrohid’s goalkeeper was in superb form and made some excellent saves and some fine clearances. In a very fairly contested match Ross forwards showed their craft and picked off some great scores. The match ended 7-07 to 1-04 to give the Ross boys their third win of the campaign.

     On Thursday evening last Carbery Rangers u14 hurlers traveled to Clonakilty to take on the home side in the league. Clon elected to play with the strong sun to their backs which put pressure on the Ross full back line. In a hard fought first half Clonakilty’s goal keeper bought off some great saves to deny the Rangers forwards. With the sides level on a number of occasions Tadgh O’Mahony struck with two great goals to leave the Ross boys leading 3-03 to 2-03 at the short whistle. The second half continued with equal intensity with both sides trading score for score. The full back line of Daniel Hodnett and Paul Shanahan had the upper hand on their opponents through the game. Thomas O’Rourke was in command at midfield but as the game entered the last minutes the sides were again level. Both sides  gave their all and when Brian Hodnett goaled in the last minute the Rangers had their second win of the campaign on a score line of 5-05 to 4-05. On Sunday evening Ross traveled to Bantry for another league game and were well beaten by an eager Bantry outfit.

Rosscarbery under 14 hurlers got their season off to a good start when they scored a 1-09 to 1-05 win over Kilmichael at Ardagh last Thursday evening. The visitors were first to register a point before Eamon O’Mahony got the first score for the home team. This was followed by points from Thomas O’Rourke, Brian Hodnett and Tadgh O’Mahony. Ross were playing well up to this point, however Kilmichael scored a goal and the sides were level mid way through the half. Ross once again took control and some fine combination play resulted in three points and a goal which gave the Ross boys a six point lead at the interval. The second period saw the visitors put on the pressure but good defense from John and Daniel Hodnett, along with Paul Shanahan and Cathal Prendergast held the visitors at bay. At the three-quarter stage Brian Hayes in the Ross goal brought off a superb save to deny the visitors a certain goal.         For the second night in a row Ahan Gaels made the trip to Ross, this time it was in the under 14 football league against the home side. Ross started well and after an early exchange of points Ross went on to lead at the break by 8 points to 2. On the change over Ross were doing alright until the visitors got 2 goals and a point in the space of a few minutes which rocked the locals. However in typical Rangers fashion they responder well and a goal mid way thru the half set them up for 1-11 to 2-05 victory.

Rosscarbery under 14 footballers were well beaten by a very strong Eire Og team in the 2008 Féile na nÓg on Saturday last and so ended their participation in this competition for this year.
