Club of the Year, West Cork Sports Star,Sports Oracle

CARBERY RANGERS GAA:

 Club of the Year Award:
Carbery Rangers is one of 5 clubs who are in the running to be named Buckley Financial Club of the Years 2010. The winner of this prestigious award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22nd January in the Maritime Hotel in Bantry.  The winner will be picked by a special panel of judges, based on not just performance and results but on organisation, volunteerism and facilities and all aspects that make up a Club.  Carbery Rangers Senior Footballers won the Kelleher Shield just before Christmas 2009 and began 2010 by beating Nemo Rangers in the Tadgh Crowley Cup final. They were the only team to beat Nemo in competitive competition this season and were unlucky to lose the semi-final to St Finbarrs later on in the year. At under age level, West Cork titles were won at U12 and U16 whilst the Minor hurlers combined with Kilmacabea won the West Cork Final. The Club were delighted to have 3 players involved on All-Ireland final day this year – Kevin Mac Mahon and John Hayes winning All-‘Ireland a senior medals and John O Rourke who win a Munster minor medal and gave outstanding performances with the Cork Minors all through up to and including the All-Ireland final. Also during the year, the Club hosted many championship matches at both the Ardagh and Newtown grounds and all games ran smoothly thanks to the volunteerism in the Club.

West Cork Sports Award 2010:
Carbery Rangers would like to wish Good Luck to Mike Keohane who is one of the twelve sports people nominated for the Overall West Cork Sports Award 2010. Mike won 4 medals for Team Ireland in the European Transplant Games in August and won the August Sports Person of the Month award. Each monthly winner now goes forward to the Overall Sports Winner 2010 which will be announced at the annual Banquet in the Celtic Ross Hotel on Saturday 8th January.

Sports Oracle:
Competitors should be busy researching their predictions for the Carbery Rangers Sports Oracle as the closing date is this week.  This is a great way to support the Club and have an ongoing interest in all the major Sports events of the year. With a large prize fund up for grabs, it really is worth your while to take the time to do that bit of research.

Also, on the night the Carbery Senior Football team of 1971 will be honoured.  This has particular significance for the Club as one of our greatest players Tony Murphy was a vital part of this team when they defeated a highly fancied UCC team in the County Final.  This was also the year Tony won U21, Munster and All-Ireland medals with Cork.  A selector on this Carbery team is our long-serving member Bill Harte who has given a lifetime to the GAA as a player, trainer, selector and referee.

UNDER 21 CHAMPOINSHIP:
Carbery Rangers bowed out of the U21 Championship on Saturday last when they were defeated by O’ Donovan Rossa in a tight encounter. Skibb were the first to score with a point then Eoin Lane had Ross level. The two teams exchanged three points each over the next 20 minutes leaving the score line tied at four points each. Then four unanswered points for Ross seemingly put them in the driving seat coming into half time but Skibb got two late points to leave the score line reading 0-8 to 0-6 at the short whistle. Skibb than had the first two scores of the second half before Carbery Ranger Kieran Fitzpatrick opened their second half account with a lovely point in the 36th minute. At the midpoint of the second half, Carbery Rangers reduced the deficit to just one point but Skibb replied in the 52nd minute of the game with an all important goal which proved to be the decisive score of the game. Carbery Rangers rallied late but could not stop Rossa winning on a final score line of 1-15 to 14 points. SENIORS:
Carbery Rangers travelled to the City on Sunday last to take on St Finbarrs in the Kelleher Shield. Finbarrs have proven to be somewhat of a bogey team for Carbery Rangers in recent years  and all games have been close and well fought. This one proved to be no different. John O Rourke had two points for Carbery Rangers in the first half and wing forward Padraig Hicks chipped in a well taken goal and a few point of his own, leaving the score level at half time with 1-7 apiece. The second half was equally as close but the Barrrs found themselves three points up with three minutes to go when Seamus Hayes pulled the Rangers level. Then James Fitzpatrick edged Rangers ahead with a pointed free and another point late in injury time secured a well deserved two point win for Carbery Rangers which was their third win of the campaign. A huge damper on this great result was the unfortunate injury to Kevin Mac Mahon who suffered a broken jaw. The Club sends best wishes to Kevin for a speedy recovery and it’s hoped that it won’t be too long before we will all see him back in the Rangers jersey again. The next outing for the Seniors is this coming Sunday against St Vincent’s and this game is fixed for Ardagh at 3pm.

Carbery Rangers Minor footballers were in Championship action against Glanmire in the Premier 2 football championship on Saturday last. In what turned out to be a very close contest the sides were one point a piece   after 8 minutes of play. Then in the 12th minute Damien O Brien made a great goal line clearance to keep the Ross goal intact which was to prove so important at the end of the game. With 3 points exchanged by both teams, they went into half time level on four points each.  In the second half, Glanmire had three unanswered points until a goal from Gearoid o Brien brought Carbery Rangers level in the 46th minute. Glanmire then restored their lead by a point, Carbery Rangers reply was a free by Terry O’Donovan. Thomas O’Rourke then put Ross into the lead for the first time since the 15 minute of the game with a well taken point and another soon follow by the very impressive Gearoid O’ Brien to ensure a hard earned but deserved victory. Two goals by Carbery Rangers’ forwards Niall Hayes and Sean O’Neill and a long range point by the aforementioned Hayes had Ross leading at half-time 2-7 Dohenys 0-4.          Carbery Rangers’ senior team continue their preparation for the up coming Championship when they played away to Nemo Rangers in the Kelleher Shield. Both sides started brightly with some well taken points, Ross had points from the very impressive Brian Shanahan and a couple from Alan Jennings. But then in the 20 minute Nemo hit the back of the Ross net for the only goal of the game. This proved to be a decisive score as both sides exchanged points for the rest of the game, Seamus & John Hayes chipping in with a few of their own but Nemo ran out winners on a score line Carbery Rangers 0-13 and Nemo Rangers 1-12. This game will be beneficial to both teams as championship looms. Carbery Rangers Junior 3s started their league over the weekend but were well defeated by a much fitter Clan na Gael team.

SENIORS:
On Friday night last Carbery Rangers were in Senior Championship action against Ilen Rovers. This was what one would call a truly great Championship game where the result was still very much in the balance right through to the 80 minute. Ilen Rovers were first to score when they had 2 pts inside 3 minutes, then Johnny Murphy who was making good head way  up from wing-back put Ross level with 2 very well taken points. John Hayes and John O’Rourke put Ross up by 2pts only for Ilen to level it again. 25 minutes played and tied at 7pts a piece, Ross then got themselves ahead coming into half-time with pts from Murphy again and Seamus Hayes before the aforementioned Hayes was pulled down in the square.  John Hayes stepped up to put the resulting penalty in the back of the net to leave Carbery Rangers leading 1-9 to 0-7 points at the break.
Ilen Rovers began the second half by reducing the deficit by two points and with their picking up a lot of breaking ball, they brought themselves back into contention with a goal in the 50th minute, leaving only a point between the sides. Two minutes later, they equalised and the game became an enthralling contest between two old rivals. Ilen Rovers took the lead in the 60th minute and time almost up but Ross broke down the field again and John Hayes getting possession out in the wing, turned in to put the ball over the bar to send the game deservedly into extra time. O Rourke & John Hayes had Ross 2 points up in extra time but Rovers replied with a point of their own before Hayes once again had Ross going into the half time talk being 1-17 to 1-15 up. Two points each were shared in the final half which resulted in Carbery Rangers coming out on top of this thrilling and highly entertaining game. There’s no doubt that this match will go down as a cracking game of football and will live in the memory of those who witnessed a great contest on the night. The final score read Carbery Rangers 1-19 to Ilen Rovers 1-17. TEAM: Maurice Moloney, Sean Hayes, Anthony Roche, Micheal Kelly, Brian Shanahan, Stephen Murray, Johnny Murphy, Micheál O Sullivan, John McCarthy, Alan Jennings, John O Rourke, James Fitzpatrick, John Hayes, Seamus Hayes, Declan Hayes.SUBS: Mike Mennis, Micheál O’ Donovan, Padraig Hodnett, Padraig Hicks, Niall Hayes & Enda Favier.

Under 16 Football:
Carbery Rangers Under 16s were in action against Clan na Gael during the week and with a very strong cross wind scoring was very difficult in the first half. Drimoleague got the first score after 7 minutes before Timmy O Donoghue got Ross on the scoreboard with a pointed free after 15 minutes. Another pointed free had Ross in the lead before Clan na Gael struck for a goal. Points were exchanged within a minute before O Donoghue dispatched a penalty in the back of the net right on the stroke of half time to leave the sides level at 1-3 each. Then from the restart Tadgh O Mahony upped his game and put in a tremendous performance for the next fifteen minutes where he scored four 4 unanswered points from play. Then Jerry O Riordan chipped the goalie to put Ross into a commanding lead only for Clan Na Gael to come back and reduce the deficit to three points with time almost up. Then with what was their last attack of the game Clan na Gael broke through the Ross defence to level the game with a goal. The final score read Carbery rangers 2-10 to Clan na Gael  3-7.
TEAM: Jack O Donoghue, Brian O Donovan, Damien O Brien, Aidan O Donovan, Cathal O Rourke, Patrick McCarthy, William Allshire, Tadgh O Mahony, Timmy O Donoghue, Eoghan Collins, Daniel Hodnett, Jerry O Riordan, John Hodnett, Austin Keane & Colm O Donovan.
UNDER 14 FOOTBALL:
The Under 14 footballers travelled to Bantry on Thursday night last and played in atrocious conditions of wind and rain. The first half finished with Bantry leading 1-3 to 0-5 points with Ross having played with the wind in the first half. Bantry would have expected to push on and win this game with the very strong wind in their favour and did have the most possession in the second half. They led by 2 goals with eight minutes to go but the young Rangers kept battling away and a point by Cian Daly who was having an excellent game at midfield – was followed by a well taken goal by David O Donovan, now operating from full forward. Maurice Allshire reduced the deficit to one point before Cian Daly came up from midfield again to rescue a draw for Carbery Rangers. This was a fantastic performance from this young team who held their nerve under trying and challenging conditions. Carbery Rangers Junior one team were in Championship action on Friday night last when they played Argideen Rangers in the first round. In what was a low scoring first half, Ross went in trailing 1-4 to 1-2 with the goal coming from midfielder Thomas O’Rourke. It was hoped that Ross would get more into the game in the second half, but this was not to be as Argideen Rangers added 8 points to their tally with Ross only scoring 1 point to leave the final score a disappointing 1-12 to 1-3.  This team will now play a second round game where we have no doubt that they will be well improved and put in a much better performance next time round.

Undoubtedly the game of the weekend was the Under 13 West Cork final where Carbery Rangers and Castlehaven played out a thriller in Leap on Sunday evening.  A close contest from the outset, the young Ross lads lead by two points to one after ten minutes of play and with some great attacking play by both teams, it was Castlehaven who rattled the back of the net midway through the first half for what proved to be the only goal of the game. This is unusual at this age level but speaks volumes for the great defence work of both teams throughout the game. The sides were level at half time at 1-3 to 0-6 points and at this stage one got the feeling that this game was going right down to the wire.  The second half started at a ferocious pace where points were exchanged in quick succession. Castlehaven went into a two point lead but the Rangers began to get to grips with midfield and levelled the game once more. Then Ross went up a point with four minutes to go only to have Castlehaven go back up the other side of the pitch to score two quick points in succession. The game at this stage was into injury time but the Ross lads kept their heads and worked the ball up the field where Mark Hodnett got possession and kicked over a great point from play to leave the sides level at full time.
Carbery Rangers 11 points to Castlehaven 1-8. Theses two fine young teams will do it all again next Sunday evening at 7pm where this game is fixed once again for Leap. Well Done to the host club Kilmacabea for their hospitality. Under 13 West Cork Final:
A cracker of a game once again as two rival clubs Carbery Rangers and Castlehaven replayed the West Cork U13 final in Kilmacabea on Sunday night last and it certainly gave value for money. Football at its best as both sides valiantly contested the first Tony Murphy Memorial Cup. Perhaps it was the Carbery Rangers lads who wanted it most because they put up a tremendous battle against the efforts of the physically stronger Haven side. From the outset it was a great night’s football. The Haven was three points up after six minutes but the Rangers were not going to give this one up without a fight. They answered the three points with three of their own and from then on it was neck and neck all the way. At the half time whistle the Haven were 0-5 to 0-4 up and the second half was even more entertaining. Carbery Rangers got the first goal by corner forward Patrick Hurley to make it 1-5 to 0-6. The Haven picked up another point only for Sean Gordon to get the first of his two goals now leaving it 2-5 to 0-7. The Haven replied with a goal of their own then the flying wing forward Aaron O Flynn got his name on the scoreboard with a coolly taken point. Sean Gordon put his second goal in the net only for the Haven to once again reply with their goal straight from the kick out. As the excitement reached fever pitch, Darragh Hayes who was winning ball in the full forward line got the Rangers’ fourth goal only for the Haven yet again to reply. It was now a two point game. Now with the Haven on top, they struck another goal and point leaving them leading by two points coming into the final minutes of the game. The grit and determination of the young Carbery Rangers was never more needed and they did not disappoint. Mark Hodnett reduced the deficit to one point but Castlehaven stretched their lead once again before Robert Hegarty fielded a great ball inside in the forward line to rattle the back of the net. Time was now running out and the Haven was on all out attack to save the game. They reduced Ross’ lead to just one point as we were now into injury time. With Castlehaven pressing for the equaliser or the winner, it was a tense few last minutes and the Haven attacked once more but a great block from John Hodnett now playing at wing forward was to be their last chance. As the final whistle blew, the delight of Carbery Rangers was sincerely felt by one and all who wanted to honour the memory of the great Carbery Ranger Tony Murphy.  This game will certainly go down as one of the all time thrillers just as the drawn match before it had done.  Sometimes replays do not live up to the drawn game but this was certainly not the case here as the replay provided an excitement that was palpable. Captain Sean Gordon proudly lifted the Cup to the delight of all the Carbery Ranger fans present. It was indeed fitting that the Tony Murphy Cup comes to Carbery Rangers for its first year and despite the difficult conditions for football, these young talented players from both teams showed us that West Cork football is very definitely in safe hands.  The under 14 footballers had a league fixture away to Ilen Rovers this past week and as most games between these clubs are very tight this was to be another one. The Ross lads were first to score when Adam Barrett had a goal after 4 minutes of play. Ilen Rovers began to come more in to the game after this setback and had three points of their own after sixteen minutes to level the score. Points from Cian Daly, David O Donavan and Danny Reynolds had Ross back in the lead. Ilen Rovers had a point of their own before Cathal O Rourke replied for Ross leaving the half time score 1-4 to 0-4. Illen Rovers now playing with the breeze in the second half were now level within ten minutes of the restart. Cathal O Rourke had Carbery Rangers back in front with a well taken point only for Ilen Rovers to draw level again. Danny Reynolds had Ross leading going into the last few minutes but Ilen Rovers replied with a point of their own to leave the final score Carbery Rangers 1-6 to Ilen Rovers 0-9.          The Under 14 footballers were in league action recently when they played Ahan Gaels in Enniskeane. It was the much stronger home team that came away with the league points in what turned out to be a very high scoring game. Six goals were shared in the first half alone the 3 Ross goals coming from midfielder Cathal O’Rourke and 2 from full-forward Danny Reynolds. But it was the ability to kick points by the home side that was the difference in this half  and they led at half-time 3-10 to Ross’3-2.Ross started to reduce that lead at the beginning of the second half with some well taken points from Robert Hegarty, two from Danny Reynolds and a brace from David O’Donovan to leave just three points between them mid-way through the half. But then Ahan Gaels got 2-3 with out reply, however, in the last five minutes goals from Stephen O’Donoghue and two from Sean Gordan had Ross back in it again, only for the home side to add two late points to win out on a final score Carbery Rangers 6-7 Ahan Gaels 5-14.TEAM.Shane O’Sullivan,Micheal O’Mahony,Jack O’Donoghue,Brian O’Sullivan,Ian Lawlor- O’Donovan,Robert Hegarty,Sean Gordan,Cian Daly,Cathal O’Rourke,Brian Callanan,Kieran Vickery,Jack Christy,Adam Barrett,Danny Reynolds,David O’Donovan.Subs.Stephen O’Donoghue Cal Keane.

Carbery Rangers Senior Footballers had their first competitive game since they defeated Ilen Rovers in the first round of the Championship when they played Ballincollig in the Kelleher Shield on Saturday night last in Ardagh.  Conditions were almost perfect with the sun shining with a slight breeze which favoured Ballincollig in the first half and they were first to score with a pointed free after 5 minutes. Full Forward Seamus Hayes had the first score for the home side in the seventh minute. Four unanswered points by Carbery Rangers had them in the driving seat mid way through the first half as they led with a score line of 0-5 to 0-4. Ballincollig came back with two points of their own only for Ross to reply with five successive points, three of these coming from the influential James Fitzpatrick in midfield.  Ross lead at halftime 0-11 to 0-5 and they were playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half. Two points a piece were exchanged within five minutes of the restart before Ross added three more points from Michéal O’ Sullivan and two from Padarig Hicks. A goal from Niall Hayes, now in full forward, had this game beyond doubt despite a late rally from Ballincollig who scored a goal and two points of their own in the closing stages.         Carbery Rangers under 13 footballers qualified in style for the county final after they recorded a big win over St. Finbarr’s played on Saturday last. Having won the toss and playing with the wind in the first half the young Ross lads wasted no time getting on the score sheet with mid-fielder Sean Gordon hitting the back of the net in the second minute. Points from Mark Hodnett, Darragh Hayes and John Hodnett and a second goal by the very impressive Sean Gordon helped Ross build up a commanding lead mid way through the half. When Robert Hegerty scored a third goal and points from the flying wing forward Aaron O’Flynn and Stephen O’Donoghue put Ross in at half time leading 3-11 to 0-2.
In the second half the Ross lads continued where they left off and made light of playing against the win. Early points from Mark Hodnett and Robert Hegarty which was soon followed by goals from the afore mention players and another from Sean Gordon saw Ross through to the final on a score line of Carbery Rangers 6-19 St. Finbarrs 1-7. This impressive game of football from the young Rangers was a display of pure teamwork and there were some moments in the game where you had to remind yourself that these were not seasoned players. It certainly bodes well for Carbery Rangers to have such a talented pool of players for the future.  The final is fixed for this coming weekend against Boherbue and you are asked to check locally for details. Points from Eamon O’Mahony, Cathal Prendergast and centre forward Geoff Wycherley had Ross leading at half time by seven points to Ilen Rovers’ no score. Barry O Hea had the first score of the second half before Ilen Rovers registered their first score. Two quick points by Cathal Prendergast, his fourth in total – stretched the Ross lead again before Ilen Rovers added four more points of their own to leave Ross winners on a final score line of Carbery rangers 0-11 to Ilen Rovers 0-5. U13 COUNTY ‘A’ CHAMPIONS:
Beated well wishes to the Carbery rangers U13 footballers who won the County Championship recently when they comprehensively defeated Banteer before a large crowd in Macroom.  It is a great achievement to be the first Club to win this  inaugural competition and the quality of football played by these young Carbery Rangers throughout the competition has been more than impressive. Ross started in great style with 2 goals from Robert Hegarty and two more goals from Sean Gordon to go into half time with a strong lead of 4-7 to 1-2. Banteer made a comeback in the second half proving that wining any County Final is no easy feat. Carbery Rangers had to find all their inner strength to hold their lead but another goal by Sean Gordon settled the nerves. Even though Banteer finished the game with a lot of possession, they never had the beatings of the impressive Rangers and the final score read Carbery Rangers 5-9 to Banteer 3-6. This Championship has given spectators some great football to watch, the crowd following the team was always impressive and it is a great honour for the Club to hold a County Championship whilst still only in the month of June. Carbery Rangers can indeed by very proud of these young players whose football was of the highest quality.  Well done to all the players and to the coaches and mentors who certainly showed that dedication to training pays off.

U14 FOOTBALL & HURLING:
The U14 footballers played the first round of their Championship on Tuesday night last when they had a comprehensive victory over O Donovan Rossa. They will now take on Dohenys in the next round of this championship. The U14 hurlers played the Mizen Rovers in their championship on Sunday evening last. First half goals came from David O Donovan and two from Sean Gordon had Ross comfortably leading at halftime with a score line of 3-5 to no score. Carbery rangers added another two goals and three points to their tally but a gallant effort by Mizen Rovers who came back with a few well taken points of their own. Next up is Barryroe in this championship. TEAM: Kieran Prendergast, Danny Reynolds, John Hodnett, Cian Daly, Jack Donoghue, Adam O Mahony, Cathal O Rorke, Brian Callanan, Robert Hegarty, Maurice Allshire, David o Donovan, Sean Gordon.Subs; Brian O Sullivan, Cian O Hea, Chris Prendergast, Stephen O Donoghue & Cathal Hennessy.

JUNIOR ONES:
Carbery Ranger Junior Ones were also in championship action during the week when they took on Bantry Blues in the second round of the championship. This game turned out to be a very hard fought game particularly in the first half when some of the tackles from the opposition were, to say the least, somewhat on the physical side. Sean O Neill ad the first two scores of the game when he pointed in the 3rd and 7th minute before Bantry got their first point from a free.  Kieran Fitzpatrick added another score for Ross after a great solo run and Sean O Neill followed suit with his third point of the game.  Bantry again pointed a free before Nicholas Peters stretched Ross’ Lead again before once again O Neill, with an impressive first half display, added a goal and appoint to leave Ross leading 1-6 to 0-3 at half time.  Bantry had the first score of the second half, scoring from play for the first time but 2 pointed frees from Ross and another from Thomas O Rourke who was impressing at centre back, stretched Ross further ahead. Bantry then got a goal and a point in the space of a minute. Kevin Mac Mahon who was injured for the first round of the Senior Championship, was running things from midfield and chipped in  appoint of his own in the 44th minute. Once again the opposition raised their game with two unanswered points, leaving just a goal between the two sides in the final ten minutes. A point each was exchanged before Bantry reduced the deficit to just two points with time almost up. But some great defending by the Carbery Rangers backs – Eugene Murphy in particular who was having a fine outing at full back made sure Carbery Rangers qualified for the next round. The final score read Carbery Rangers 1-11 to Bantry Blue 1-9.TEAM: Robbie Ahern, Bobby Kelly, Eugene Murphy, James Cussen, Conor O Rouke, Thomas O Rourke, Michael Cussen, Kevin Mac Mahon, David Creedon, Ger Flavin, Myles O Riordan, Nicholas Peters, Sean O Neill, Ronan Milner, Kieran Fitzpatrick.SUBS: Alan O Reagan, Chris O Donovan

Two Carbery Rangers teams found themselves in action away to the Dohenys over the weekend. First up were the Minor footballers on Friday night last who played their first game since the exams. An early goal by wing-back Eamon O’Mahony gave the Ross lads a great start. This was followed with points by Brian Hodnett from play and Terry O’Donovan from some well taken frees. Then Vincent Hodnett who was doing very well full-forward had a second goal mid way through the half. Dohenys reply was a penalty which was dispatched to the back of the Ross net and secured three more  points. Late scores by Thomas O’Rourke and Sean O’Regan left Ross leading at the break 2-7 to Dohenys 1-3. From the restart Dohenys scored two points and then Ross had to replace their midfielder Thomas O’Rourke who sustained a injury late in the first half.  This was to benefit the home side who then continued to have more possession mid way through the second half, now with only three points between the teams. But Ross with pointed frees from Terry O’Donovan all from the ground, which has been a topic of debate of late, and one each by Sean O’Regan and Tadhg O’Mahony helped Ross record a good win. Final score Carbery Rangers 2-11 Dohonys 1-10.

JUNIOR FOUR FOOTBALL
It was back to Dunmanway again on Saturday evening for the first Round of the Junior Four football Championship. Carbery Rangers were first to score when Geoff Wycherley and Cathal Prendergast both had points from play inside three minutes.  Dohenys were to score 1-4 before Brian Hayes had Ross’ next point in the 16 minute. Two more points by the Dohenys and a Mike Walsh point for Ross left the half time score  Dohenys 1-6 Ross 0-4.  Points from Vincent Hodnett and Cathal Prendergast reduced the lead to just a goal. Dohenys increased their lead again when they pointed, only for Eammon O’Mahony  and Geoff Wycherley to score points to leave the game there for the taking for both sides.  The home side pointed again so at this stage Ross were now looking for a goal. Peter Nagle who had a fine outing at mid-field was to score a great goal when he picked up a breaking ball around the middle of the field and ran all the way to the 14 yard line and unleashed an unstoppable shot which flew into the top corner of the net. Cathal Prendergast scored the last and winning point in the 58 minute to send Ross into the next round.TEAM; Paul Shanahan, Donal Santry, Padraig O’Donovan, Joseph O’Sullivan, Cian O’Mahony, Eammon O’ Mahony, Stephan Vickery, Cathal Prendergast, Mike Walsh, Brendan Canty, Geoff Wycherley, Barry O Hea, Brian Hayes, Vincent Hodnett, Noel O Donovan.

U13 HURLING:
Carbery Rangers U13 Hurlers played O Mathunas in the first round of the championship on a very wet and windy night in Ahiohill on Monday night last. Mathunas were the first to score when they had 1-1 in the first seven minutes. Ross’ reply were two goals by full forward Darren Hayes and Sean Gordon. Robert Hegarty added two points late in the first half to leave Ross leading 2-2 to 1-2. With conditions in thee second half proving very difficult for hurling, both teams did their best to play good hurling but Ross handled the conditions better and another two goals by Darren Hayes & Robert Hegarty proved to be decisive. The play of the game would have to be a shot by Mathunas who were now looking for goals but a great save by Ross goalkeeper Cathal Prendergast, which any goalkeeper in the country would be proud to save, kept the Ross goal intact in the second half. Final score was Carbery Rangers 4-2 to O Mathunas 1-3TEAM: Ciaran Prendergast, Mark Hodnett, Adam O Mahony, Chris Prendergast, James O Riordan, John Hodnett, Cathal Hennessy, Sean Gordon, Maurice Allshire, Aaron O Flynn, Robert Hegarty, John O Brien, Eamonn Shanahan, Darren Hayes Darragh Hayes.

Carbery Rangers made the short trip to Clonakilty on Sunday last when they played the home team in the Kelleher Shield. At the Mid way point of the first half the sides were level at four points each. The Ross scores coming from John O’Rourke[2], Padraig Hicks and a John Hayes free. Two more well taken scores by O’Rourke were cancelled out by Clon to leave the sides level at half time 0-6 each. The second half turned out to be low scoring with only five points scored, but the wind played its part in that. Three of those scores came from the Ross lads, John Hayes in the 43 minute, this was followed by a long range point from Michéal O’Sullivan and the winning score coming from John O’Rourke who was in great form all through the game.Final score  Carbery Rangers 0-9 Clonakilty 0-8.

Carbery Rangers under 14 hurlers were defeated by Barryroe in the Rebel Óg West Region Final on Thursday evening last. Carbery Rangers were first off the mark with two points from centre back Jack O’Donoghue inside the opening four minutes. Barryroe got their first point soon after only for Robert Hegarty to get on the score sheet with two points mid way through the half. Jack O’Donoghue added another to stretch  the Ross lead coming up to the twenty minute mark. From this to half time Barryroe came more into the game and were to score five unanswered points, leaving Ross trailing at the break 0-6 to 0-5.  At the restart Barryroe increased there lead with a point, before O’Donoghue had two more points to level matters in the 35 minute. This was the last score Ross were to get until Brian Callanan pointed in the closing stages, but by then Barryroe had the greater amount of possession which yielded four points to see Barryroe capture the cup. Final score Carbery Rangers 0-8 Barryroe 0-11.TEAM Ciaran Prendergast, Danny Reynolds, John Hodnett, Edmund Beese, Jack O’Donoghue, Adam O’Mahony, Cathal O’Rourke, Cian Daly, Robert Hegerty, Sean Gordan, Maurice Allshire, Brian Callanan.          The Ross under 16s played Ilen Rovers in the league on Friday last which was played in Rath. They say goals win you games and in the first half of this game Ilen were to score three along with three points. To the credit of the Ross lads they stayed in touch with five very well taken points to leave the half time score Ross 0-5 Ilen Rovers 3-3. A goal and a point at the start of the second half by Ilen looked like this game was over.  But the Ross lads got themselves back into it with 1-5 without reply, and then Ilen got in for another goal. This was by no means the end of the Ross lads and Carbery Rangers were rewarded a penalty which was dispatched to the back of the net by Timmy O’ Donoghue. This was soon followed by another point before Jerry O Riordan goaled again for Ross. Unfortunately time was against the Rangers, and Ilen Rovers hung on to record a three point victory.Final score: Carbery Rangers 3-10 to Ilen Rovers 5-7 TEAM: Shane O Sullivan, Aidan O Donovan, Damien O Brien, Brian O Donovan, Cathal O Rourke, Timmy O Donoghue, Patrick McCarthy, Tadgh O Mahony, Eoghan Collins, William Allshire, Matt O Brien, Jerry O Riordan, John Hodnett, Austin Keane, Colm O Donovan.SUBS: Jonathan Christy, Brian Callanan

Under 14s:
“It’s a shame there has to be a winner” said one spectator at the recent Carbery Rangers v. Bantry Blues Rebel Óg West Region semi-final and how true for this cracker of a match between two highly competitive sides. From the first breaking ball Carbery Rangers’ Brian Callanan burst forth and in an impressive series of passes there was a lovely point from corner forward David O Donovan to put the Rangers first on the scoreboard to be followed shortly by another Ross point from O Donovan again. Bantry had a shot blocked by the able Cian Daly and a lovely interplay of football between Cathal O’ Rourke and Maurice Allshire put the score at 0-3 for Carbery Rangers. Bantry Blues, physically much bigger, were reeling with the shock for the first twenty minutes but soon knocked over their first point. Rangers’ Jack O Donoghue was proving to be a brick wall for the Blues forwards, and cleared a number of potentially dangerous balls throughout the game. Brian Callanan gave a great effort at goal only to be blocked by the Blues goalie, who wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Minor team.  Carbery Rangers had some great interplay between Cathal O Rourke and Sean Gordon but again the goalie was not making it easy, even saving two points in the game. On the other side of the field, Bantry took their own goal despite the best efforts of goalie Shane O’ Sullivan. Carbery Rangers’ Stephen O Donoghue, a reliable and hard working forward throughout the match, scored a cool point to make the scoreline 1-3 to Carbery Rangers 0 –5 at half time.
In the second half, Carbery rangers kept up an impressive play of football with opening points from the ever solid Cathal O Rourke and the highly impressive Brian Callanan. Goalie Shane O Sullivan himself made a few cool saves to keep the match level all the way. Solid displays from Robert Hegarty, now in mid field and  Ian Lawlor-O Donovan with some great blocks from corner backs Brian O Sullivan and Michéal O Mahony, kept it level all the way.  In the closing minutes, it seemed as if the Rangers could pull off a sneaky victory as substitute Mark Hodnett just skimmed the post.
With the scores level, and both sides fighting tooth and nail to secure the win, the closing minutes were exciting to watch. Carbery Rangers goalie Shane O Sullivan held his nerve with a great save to end the match with a draw and certainly the fairest result for the night. With the two sides meeting again shortly, it really is a shame to have a winner! Final Score: Carbery Rangers 0-9 to Bantry Blues 1-6TEAM: Shane O Sullivan, Michéal O Mahony, Jack O Donoghue, Brian O Sullivan, Sean Gordon, Robert Hegarty, Ian Lawlor O Donovan, Cathal O Rourke, Cian Daly, Brian Callanan, Danny Reynolds, Kieran Vickery, Stephen O Donoghue, Maurice Allshire and David O Donovan SUBS: Mark Hodnett, Adam O Mahony

Minors
Carbery Rangers Minors bowed out of the Premier Two minor football championship on Sunday evening last when they took on Castlelyons. Ross were dealt a blow after only forty three seconds when Castlelyons had the ball in the back of the net right after throw in. Gearoid O Brien got Ross on the score board with a appoint after three minutes only for Castlelyons to do likewise at the other end of the field. Thomas O Rourke, who had his hands full in midfield, scored two well taken points to reduce the deficit to just one point. Castlelyons added two more from play in the space of a minute before Tadhg O Mahony and Sean O Regan got on the scoreboard with points of their own. Castlelyons went in at half time leading 1-4 to 0-5.
From the restart Carbery Rangers started to stamp their authority on the game when Tadhg O Mahony who was now being very influential in the Ross forward line scored two points which was soon followed by another from Sean O Regan. This put Ross in the lead for the first time. Castlelyons’ first score of the second half came in the forty fifth minute when they got their second goal of the game. Ross’ reply was a free from Sean O Regan but Castlelyons upped their game again and added two more points before once again Tadhg O Mahony pointed for Carbery Rangers, which was to be their last score of the game. Castlelyons scored a  further two points in injury time winning out on a final score of Carbery Ranger 0-10 to Castlelyons 2-8.

Senior
Carbery Rangers were in Senior Championship action on Sunday evening last when they played Ballincollig in the fourth round. This was a first outing in the Championship since May the 6th when they defeated Ilen Rovers, but the wait was worth it.  On a wet surface Ross were off the mark after three minutes with a point from Michéal O’Sullivan, then Seamus Hayes added another soon after. Ballincollig’s  first and only score of the half came from a free in the twelve minute. Hayes pointed again with a lovely score from the outside of the boot before Kevin Mac Mahon burst through the middle of the Ballincollig’s defence to leave Ross ahead by three. John Hayes had the final say of the half when he pointed a free just before the whistle sounded.  Full marks to the Ross lads for only conceding one score in all of the half, this is surely some fete for senior football when you consider their was no wind what so ever.  Seamus Hayes pointed two minutes after the restart, before Ballincollig had two of their own. John Hayes popped up with his second of the game, then a point each inside a minute left Ross leading by four. Again Seamus Hayes stretched the Ross lead to five, before Ballincollig got the only goal near the end to leave only two between the sides. Ross saw out the remaining time to progress on to the quarter-finals. This was a great team performance built on the hard work done on the training ground. Well done to all involved. UNDER 14’S REPLAY:
Carbery Rangers took on Bantry Blues in the replay of the Under 14 Rebel Óg West Region semi-final last week and as with the previous game, it proved another cracker of a match. Carbery Rangers stormed into a lead with great points from Cathal O Rourke (2) and David O Donovan leaving the score line 0-3 to Rangers after 12 minutes. Bantry replied with a point despite great efforts from the hard-working Rangers backline of Jack O Donoghue, Kieran Vickery and Robert Hegarty. Rangers’ Forward Brian Callanan knocked over a well taken point following some great team work by the Carbery Rangers and at the other end of the filed, the Rangers goalie made some excellent saves.  But Bantry’s obvious physical advantage was making it difficult, and left the score line at half time 1-5 to Bantry’s 3-4.
The second half saw Rangers open with another great free by Cathal O’ Rourke only for Bantry to answer with a point of their own. A penalty had Rangers face the might of the Blues’ goalie but O Rourke showed great foresight to watch the rebound, making it 2-5 to 3-5. Rangers’ goalie Shane O’ Sullivan pulled off another save and Rangers went up the field to get another point. Great work from Robert Hegarty, Jack O’ Donoghue Brian O’ Sullivan, Michéal O’ Mahony & Kieran Vickery were making it challenging for the Bantry team but they had enough done to win the game by a goal with a score line of Carbery Rangers 2-7 to Bantry Blues 3-7. Despite the defeat, these young Carbery Rangers should be extremely proud of their display of football in these two matches against a much bigger and physical side in the Blues. Their performances showed consistent team work throughout and hails a bright future for Carbery Rangers’ football.TEAM: Shane O’ Sullivan, Michéal O Mahony, Jack O’ Donoghue, Brian O’ Sullivan, Sean Gordon, Robert Hegarty, Ian Lawlor O’ Donovan, Cathal O’ Rourke, Cian Daly, Brian Callanan, Danny Reynolds, Kieran Vickery, Jack Christy, Maurice Allshire and David O’ Donovan. Senior Football
Carbery Rangers and Newcestown must meet again after they played out an exciting draw in the Quarter-Final of the Senior football Championship on Saturday last. Ross was quicker to settle and after ten minutes were leading by three points, these scores coming from John Hayes, John O’Rourke and Brian Shanahan.
At the twenty minute point Ross lead by 0-5 to 0-2 but Newcestown finished the half stronger with four unanswered scores to leave them ahead at the break 0-6 to 0-5.The second half was to be a very closely contested thirty minutes. Brian Shanahan leveled the game straight from the restart, then James Fitzpatrick kicked a great free to put Ross one up. In the forty minute Newcestown scored the only goal of the game, but two points by John Hayes who was now turning on the style leveled it again. Points were exchanged to leave the score 0-10 to 1-7 the Ross score coming from the very impressive Micheal O’Sullivan. Declan Hayes was unlucky not to goal for Ross when he went on a solo run and his powerful shot coming back off the Newcestown crossbar.
With one minute of normal time left Newcestown inched ahead by a point, but this Ross team has been through the mill over the years and knew that their was plenty of time to level it again.  Then six minutes into  injury time Ross were awarded a free near the forty-Five meter line and up came the ever cool John Hayes to score and send the game to a replay, this free will live long in the memory of those at the game as this was what you call a pressure kick. FINAL SCORE Carbery Rangers 0-12 Newcestown 1-9.
JUNIOR FOUR FOOTBALL
Carbery Rangers were defeated by Castlehaven in the Semi-Final of the Championship on Thursday night last. Ross made the better start to the game and was 1-1 up after six minutes. Castlehaven came more into after a poor start and scored 1-3 with out reply. Points from Ivan Jennings and two forty-fives converted by goalkeeper Paul Shanahan helped Ross back in front at half-time by 1-4 to Castlehaven 1-3. Noel O’Donovan added a point from the first Ross attack of the second half, but the Haven got themselves back in the game with a goal and three points with out reply. Conor McMcarthy, who on the night along with Paul Shanahan were Ross’ best on view, pointed two frees to keep them in it. Castlehaven finished with two more scores to win out on a final score line of Carbery Rangers 1-8 Castlehaven 2-8.

Carbery Rangers and Newcestown met in the replay of the Senior Championship on Saturday last, and this time around the Ross’ lads made sure of their place in the semi-final for the second consecutive year. Playing with the aid of a very strong wind in the first half  Ross led at the mid way stage by 0-5 to 0-1, the Ross scores coming from Brian Shanahan [2],who was to have a fine outing John Hayes [2] and John O’Rourke[1] all coming from play. James Fitzpatrick along with his midfield partner Michael O’Sullivan were now in control of the middle of the pitch then pointed a free from the side line. Two late scores by John Hayes saw Ross go in leading at the break by seven points.
From the restart Newcestown were first to score in the 32 minute, only for James Fitzpatrick to kick a great point against the wind to put Ross up by seven again. Newcestown were now throwing everything to try and reduce the Ross lead and did so with three points in a row. John Hayes had another point to keep Ross that bit ahead all day. It was always going to be tough against the wind but with the Ross backs working very hard to limit the threat from the Newcestown Forwards, and Alan Jennings who was having his best outing so far and John O’Rourke along with the rest of the forwards finished the stronger of the teams.
Hayes again had the final say this week when he pointed his six score of the game to send Carbery Rangers through to a semi-final against neighbours Castlehaven. This is fixed for Saturday the 24th of September at 8pm in Pairc Ui Rinn. Well done to the host club for making sure everything went to plan on the day.

Carbery Rangers senior Footballers traveled to Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last to play Castlehaven in the County semi-Final. Everyone went expecting a close game but this was not to be. Castlehaven were first to settle into the game and at the end of the first quarter found themselves 1-5 to the good. There were to be no scores again until injury time when Brian Shanahan pointed for Ross and the Haven replied  with a point of their own on the blow of the half-time whistle. It was always going to be a tough ask to come back from eight points down, but Ross kept at it and some well taken points by John Hayes [3] and wing back Stephen Murray saw them try and get in touch with the Haven.
But in truth this night belonged to Castlehaven who played some very good football and were truly well deserved winners on the night. Carbery Rangers sends on its congratulations to the Haven lads and mentors and wish them the very best of luck in the County final. Thanks also to all the Ross players and mentors for all the time and commitment they have given during the year, and all though Saturday night was not our night it must not be forgotten that they have given us so many good days out not only this year but for many years. There is no doubt, but we have not seen the last of this team.

UNDER 13
The under 13 Footballers are through to there fourth final of the year when they defeated Clonakilty in the semi-final of the cup last week. Having defeated Kilmeen in the last round it was always going to be a hard task to win this one, but these young lads have been playing so well all year they were eager to continue the high standard they have set for themselves. Playing with the wind in the first half Ross got off to a great start and made the most of that wind when Mark Hodnett, John Hodnett and Darragh Hayes scored early points. Then goals by Jack Maguire and Mark Hodnett again helped Ross into a half time lead of 2-10 to Clonakilty’s 0-3.After the restart Cathal Hennessy made a great save, before Clon had a goal and a few points to keep them in touch. Then a very well worked goal by the Ross forwards was then finished to the back of the Clon net by the impressive Aaron O’Flynn who was now playing at full-forward. Ross finished the stronger even against the wind and ended up winning on a final score of Carbery Rangers 3-13 Clonakilty 2-7.Ross will now play the winners of Dohenys or Castlehaven in the final. U14 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS:
Last Sunday morning Carbery Rangers U14 hurlers travelled to Clonakilty to take on Barryroe in the league final. It was the third occasion these sides had met and with a win each a close encounter was expected. Unfortunately the weather was horrible but the pitch held up very well to the conditions.
From the throw in Ross raced into a 4 point lead with scores from Cathal O’ Rourke, Robert Hegarty, Sean Gordon and Brian Callanan. Barryroe pulled 2 back but Robert Hegarty blasted a goal and  a point to put the Ross lads in command. The half back line of Edmond Beese , Jack O’Donoghue and Adam O’Mahony were in control and snuffed out the opposition attack. Both sides landed points as the game approached half time, and when ref Michael Collins blew for half time Ross had a lead of 1.06/ 0.04 .
On the restart Barryroe put on great pressure but the Ross full back line of Cian Daly, and John Hodnett were outstanding and David O’ Donovan in goal had little to do. Cathal O’ Rourke drilled in a great goal and Sean Gordon put over 3 points (2 frees) to stretch the lead. Michael O’Mahony worked hard on the edge of the square and on the 17 minute Danny Reynolds popped up to score a goal from close range. Some astute changes from the Ross side line yielded dividends and super sub Cathal Hennessy cracked in a goal and a point to seal victory. Final score Ross 4-10 Barryroe 0-05 . Fachtna Mc Carthy of Bord na nOg presented the plaque to captain Danny Reynolds. Subs Cian O Hea, Brian O’ Sullivan, Ciaran Prendergast, Stephen O’ Donoghue, Christopher Prendergast.

Kelleher Shield Final

Carbery Rangers 3-8 Castlehaven 1-11
CARBERY Rangers claimed the silverware in dramatic fashion in Dunmanway last night when a 1-1 injury-time blast turned the tables on their championship conquerors Castlehaven in the Cork SFL Division 1 (Kelleher Shield) final.
Castlehaven looked on course entering injury-time but after Brian Hurley saw his effort from a tricky free strike the woodwork, Carbery Rangers surged downfield and won a free 35 yards from goal. John Hayes swung in his shot but the ball cannoned against the upright and in a frenzied goalmouth scramble, sub Michael Mennis booted to the net.

Carbery Rangers protected and after Castlehaven midfielder Sean Dineen was sent-off for a second bookable offence, John Hayes capped their victory when he popped over a 65th minute free. It was a sweet success for Carbery Rangers, convincingly defeated by their opponents in last month’s county semi-final. In contrast, Castlehaven were forced to absorb another sickening final defeat, 11 days after their championship decider loss to UCC.

On a bitterly cold night this was a full-blooded contest as referee Michael Collins dished out 12 yellow cards – nine to Castlehaven and three to Carbery Rangers – over the hour.

The physical tone of the game was set in the early stages but it was Carbery Rangers who were first on the scoreboard when John Hayes got the vital touch to divert a long ball from Alan Jennings into the net. There was some confusion as to whether the ball had gone wide or crept into the bottom corner but Collins and his umpires adjudged it was a goal after consultation.

Yet Castlehaven weathered that early storm and bounced back impressively. Mark Collins, Seanie Cahalane and Brian Hurley were in terrific form in attack, conjuring up 1-3 between them by the 16th minute. Hurley grabbed the goal when he slammed a shot to the roof of the net after Collins’ attempt from a free came back off the post.

Scorers were scarce for Carbery in the first-half but they grabbed another goal in the 27th minute when a John Hayes ‘45 was flicked to the net by James Fitzpatrick to draw level. Points by Collins and Hurley restored Castlehaven’s advantage before the break and their supremacy was reflected in their 1-5 to 2-0 interval lead.

The second-half was a more open and enterprising affair with Castlehaven making the initial break as they moved into a 1-8 to 2-1 lead when Damien Cahalane knocked over a superb point in the 38th minute. However, Carbery Rangers neverwilted with John Hayes reeling off three points in succession before an outstanding score by Fitzpatrick levelled the game.

The closing quarter was frenetic as the teams scrapped ferociously for the spoils. A fine brace from Collins nudged Castlehaven ahead but Seamus Hayes and Fitzpatrick displayed the composure to tie the game with precise kicks. Then an excellent left-footed point by Castlehaven’s Seanie Cahalane looked to be the winning score in the 58th minute but Carbery Rangers pounced for crucial scores in injury-time.

Scorers for Carbery Rangers: J Hayes 1-5 (0-4f), J Fitzpatrick 1-2, M Mennis 1-0, S Hayes 0-1.

Castlehaven: M Collins 0-6 (0-2f), B Hurley 1-2, S Cahalane 0-2, D Cahalane 0-1.

CARBERY RANGERS: M Moloney; M Kelly, M O’Donovan; S Hayes; S Murray, K McMahon, J Murphy; M O’Sullivan, A Jennings; P Hodnett, J Fitzpatrick, B Shanahan; J Hayes, J O’Rourke, S Hayes.

Kelleher Shield,U13,Minor, Agm, Lotto

It was a busy week on the playing front for the club with two league finals and a semi – final played. First up were the Seniors when they took on Castlehaven in the Kelleher Shield final. This was the third meeting of the year between these two teams, with one win a piece thus far.  The Ross lads were first to score when a long ball by Alan Jennings was punched to the net by John Hayes after seven minutes. Castlehaven had the better of the scoring for the next quarter of the game when they got 1 - 3 with out reply. Then James Fitzpatrick had a second goal for Ross when he also punched the ball into the Haven net in the 26th minute which left the Haven leading at the break by two points.
The second half had plenty to keep the supporters on their toes, with early points exchanged in the opening minutes of the half. Then the Rangers scored four unanswered points, before Castlehaven went in to a one point lead entering the last few moments of the contest. Ross were awarded a free to level the game but for once John Hayes’ free hit the post only for Michael Mennis to get the rebound and his shot looped over the keeper’s reach and into the back of the net. John Hayes added a point to secure victory and win the Kelleher Shield for the second time in three years. Final Score: Carbery Rangers 3-8 Castlehaven 1-11.

On Sunday morning the two clubs met again in the Under 13 league final which was a repeat of the championship final from the summer and again goals were to prove vital to the outcome of this game. Ross were first to settle and early goals from Sean Gordon and points from John and Mark Hodnett helped Ross into a lead of 2-3 to 0-4 at half time. Castlehaven started to get more into the game after the break but then mid way through the half Ross went on a goal spree and added four more from Robert Hegarty [2] Peter Og Hill and Sean Gordon.
Ross tapped in a few late points from Stephen O Donoghue and John Hodnett to run out convincing winners on a final score of 7 -8 to 1-9. A delighted Cal Keane accepted the League Cup on behalf of the team. This is the 3rd Cup for this impressive team who earlier in the year captured the West Cork and also the County Cup. Medals will be presented to the players in late November.

The Club then travelled to Castletownkennigh for the Minor League County semi-final against Glanmire. Poor underfoot conditions made it difficult to play any good football and explains a low scoring match. The sides were level at half time with three points each, the Ross scores coming from Sean O’Regan, Thomas O’Rourke and Terry O’Donovan. A goal was always going to be a decisive score and Glanmire were to get it soon after the restart. Credit to the Ross team they continue to work hard but two points from Thomas O’Rourke were not enough to peg back that early second half goal, and Glanmire won out on a final score of
Carbery Rangers 0-5 Glanmire 1-5.

On Saturday night last Carbery Rangers GAA club held their AGM before a large crowd in the Celtic Ross Hotel. Chairperson Kevin Santry got the meeting under way by thanking all those who helped in the running of the club during the year, which included officers, trainers, selectors,  those who sold lotto tickets or helped in hosting games and all those who contributed in any way in making this past year so successful. This volunteerism is at the heart of Carbery Rangers, ensuring the high standards and excellence within the Club.
Kevin also appealed for more young people to get involved in the training of teams and in the day to day running of the club which is getting more demanding with every passing year. The Chairperson also  congratulated all the Football and Hurling teams who represented the club during the year especially the Senior team who won the Kelleher Shield final, the under 13 footballers who captured the West Cork and County titles whist also winning the league, and the under 12, 13 and 14 Hurling teams who won their leagues.
Then the Secretary Brendan O’Sullivan addressed the meeting by giving a very detailed account of how all teams performed in their competitions. Congratulations were sent to John O’Rourke on winning a Munster under 21 medal with Cork and to James Fitzpatrick and Mike Mennis on winning Sigerson  Cup medals with UCC. Brendan then thanked all who were involved in the running of our main fundraisers like the annual Sports Oracle and the Golf Classic which proved to be very successful for the club.
Brendan extended sympathies to all our GAA families who were bereaved throughout the year. He acknowledged the work and efforts of those running the Club’s weekly Lotto competition, in particular Lotto coordinator James Ronan. Presentation,Team of The Month,Lotto.

Carbery Rangers held their Presentation Night for the successful U13 Footballers, and U12, U13 & U14 Hurling teams in the Celtic Ross Hotel on Saturday night last. A large crowd was in attendance to see the future Carbery Rangers acknowledged for their fine displays of skills over the past season. Chairperson Kevin Santry got proceedings underway by congratulating all the players, selectors, parents and guardians for their dedication and commitment during the year. He also welcomed the Guest of honour Cork footballer Alan O’ Connor, who himself spoke about the rewards of training hard and commended Carbery rangers on an impressive range of Silverware that was won by the Club and on view on the night. Alan was very generous with his time and posed for photographs with enthusiastic young players and their parents.
Also on the night Carbery Rangers acknowledged the achievements of Michael Mennis, & James Fitzpatrick on winning Sigerson Cup medals with UCC. James was also a member of the Cork senior Football panel that won the national League Title. John O Rourke was also present and worthy of his award with his involvement in the Cork Under 21 Football team that won Munster Final. Its not so long ago that these three players were collecting their U14 medals for Carbery Rangers and this bodes well for the present underage players who will no doubt follow in these lads’ footsteps.
The senior football team received their award as Team of the Month for October and Johnny Murphy was on hand to accept this on their behalf. Two sets of jerseys were presented to the Club on the night: the Celtic Ross Hotel presented a set to the senior team whilst Rosscarbery Black Pudding presented a new set to the U16 team. The Club is indeed grateful for this generous sponsorship particularly in these difficult times.
The Club’ s Lotto was not won. Numbers drawn were 16, 19 and 28. 0 euro goes to Eoghan O Donovan, Rowry, 30 euro to Daniel Kelly and 20 euro to Joe Tyner, Sams Cross. The Club Lotto returns on January 23rd 2012.

As another year comes to a close and after the recent AGM with new  officers appointed for 2012, it is only right and fitting that as a club we always remember those who lead Carbery Rangers in the past so this week we go back  50 years to 1961. President at the time was J.J. McCarthy, Newtown, Chairman Jeremiah Hayes, Church Street.
