Finely-tuned Rangers show their mettle to master Clon

Carbery Rangers 1-14 Clonakilty 1-07
By Fintan O'Toole

Monday, May 07, 2012

Carbery Rangers issued a significant statement of intent at the opening hurdle of the Cork SFC in Dunmanway last night when they swept past Clonakilty.

The Rosscarbery side may have seen their 2011 campaign ended by local rivals Castlehaven at the semi-final juncture, but made no mistake in another West Cork derby this year. Memories of the 16-point hiding against Clonakilty during their first senior football season six years ago rescinded last night as Carbery Rangers conjured up a dominant display.

They fielded a starting 15 that varied in terms of personnel and positioning from that which fell short last September. Those alterations worked well for the side, particularly in the redeployment of players to different sectors of the pitch. The most striking change saw John O’Rourke, a wing-forward on the recent Munster U21FC winning Cork side, relocated to centre-back and he was excellent in anchoring his team’s challenge.

The fact Carbery Rangers only conceded four points during the encounter, and none at all in the second-half, was a testament to the quality of Michael Kelly, Sean Hayes and Stephen Murray’s defending.

At midfield James Fitzpatrick was the dominant performer as he regularly orchestrated the flow of play and weighed in with three points to his name as well. John Hayes’ free-taking was outstanding and his trickery also saw him evade the Clonakilty defence to pick off two points from play.

And Carbery Rangers had strength in reserve as well that they could utilise to kill the game off. Thomas O’Rourke, younger brother of John and current Cork minor full-back, was sprung from the bench to confidently kick a brace of points.

2009 county champions Clonakilty were left disappointed by the eventual outcome and must now brace themselves for a backdoor meeting with St Nicholas or Newcestown.

They were highly competitive in the opening quarter and, assisted by the breeze, were 0-3 to 0-2 ahead after 12 minutes with Colin O’Donovan converting dead ball situations. Yet Carbery Rangers took over with the intensity and work rate of their play all over the pitch leading to a spell of dominance. They strung together five points on the trot – Shanahan, Hayes (three) and Fitzpatrick – to move into a commanding 0-7 to 0-3 lead.

Clonakilty mounted a revival with Thomas Clancy and Denis Murphy tightening up matters at the back, and Liam Lyons and Padraig Griffin raiding successfully for points.

By the break Carbery Rangers scoring advantage was still satisfactory at 0-8 to 0-5. But Clonakilty wiped it out seven minutes into the second-half when a footblock stopped Griffin’s shot and a penalty was awarded. Conor McManus, who began this year as part of Jimmy McGuinness’s Donegal squad for the Dr McKenna Cup and had been playing club football with Kilcar, marked his return to Clonakilty by firing into the bottom corner.

However, Rangers’ response was telling and a measure of their approach to this game.

They worked the ball downfield from the kickout and Micheal O’Sullivan pumped a long ball into the attack. John Hayes seized possession before unleashing a shot that was well-blocked by Patrick O’Regan but the rebound fell kindly for the inrushing Seamus Hayes to shoot to the net. From there they took control with Fitzpatrick, Hayes (two) and McMahon stretching their lead to 1-12 to 1-5 entering the final quarter. Clonakilty opted to shake things up late on by introducing young attackers like Jonathan Leahy and Barry O’Mahony into their forward line.

But Carbery Rangers defence held firm and Clonakilty could only muster two points courtesy of frees from McManus and David O’Regan. Those scores were cancelled out by efforts by Thomas O’Rourke as Rangers advanced to the fourth round.

Carbery Rangers and Clonakilty met in the first round of the Evening Echo Sponsored Cork County Senior football Championship on Sunday evening last in Dunmanway. Playing against the wind for the opening half Ross settled fast where John Hayes pointed in the first attack. Clon were level soon after, then points were exchanged before Clon went into the lead for the first and only time of the night. Brian Shanahan who was having a great outing on the 40 kick a fine score before John Hayes had 3 frees with out reply. Two points followed for Clon before James Fitzpatrick and Hayes again helped Ross to a half time lead of 0-8 to 0-5.
The second half started  with Clon trying to get back in the game and were fortunate to get a penalty which they scored from, only for Ross to get the goal back straight from the kick out when Seamus Hayes hit the back of the net. Clon were to fine their path to goal a very hard task for the rest of the match, with the Ross backs at their best especially corner back Micheal Kelly who had a great game.  From here on there was only going to be one winner and furthers points from James Fitzpatrick who was outstanding in mid-field John Hayes, Kevin MacMahon and two wonderful points from Thomas O’Rourke who was now on at wingback. This burst of scores sealed a well deserved win on a final score of Carbery Rangers 1-14 Clonakilty 1-7.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL
The young Footballers of Carbery Rangers were defeated by the Dohenys in the County semi-final over the weekend. Ross started the game playing against the wind and did very well to be down by only 6 points at the break and this should have been just 3 points as Ross had the ball over the Dohenys goal line but both umpires falled to help the referee out on this decision which was to be very costly at the end. In the second half Ross battled back to leave just one point between the teams going into the last few minutes. But try as they did these young Carbery Rangers players could not find the winning score they so richly deserved a went  down on a final score of Carbery Ranges 2-4  Dohenys 1-7.
Well done to all involved for the work done with this team and there is no doubt the future looks good for these players.

GLASNEVIN UNVEILING:
Timothy Jerome O’Mahony, aka ‘The Rosscarbery Steam Engine’,  received final official national recognition when a new headstone was unveiled  in Glasnevin cemetery last  Saturday 12th May - 98 years after the Cork runner’s death in Smithfield, Dublin. Nearly 124 years after O’Mahony became the 400 metres Champion of the USA on the GAA’s Gaelic Invasion tour of America, legendary sports commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh performed  the unveiling ceremony at grave plot number RH272.
“The placing of this headstone on T.J. O’Mahony’s grave in Glasnevin represents the culmination of a wonderful series of recent events to mark the runner’s achievements,” said Mr Ó Muircheartaigh, “I am delighted to say there have been an exceptional number of heartwarming goodwill gestures and financial contributions coming into play to make this day happen for someone who was a proud Irish man and a remarkable champion athlete of the pre-modern Olympic era.”
The headstone unveiling marked  the final chapter in the ‘campaign’ for recognition for O’Mahony, with direct involvement from GAA headquarters, the Glasnevin Trust, the National Graves Association, Carbery Rangers GAA club and Rosscarbery Community Council. Patrick Barry, the noted Co Cork-based sculptor,  did the engraving on  stone donated by McKeon Stone of Stradbally, Co Laois, from a quarry in Kilkenny.
“In the 1880s, an economically challenging time in Ireland, for ‘The Rosscarbery Steam Engine’ to achieve what he did was remarkable,” added Mr Ó Muircheartaigh. “He is an example to our young people that Irish athletes from even the smallest towns and villages can take on and beat the world’s best.”
Michael O'Sullivan was a most competent  master of ceremonies on the day and special gratitude was expressed by Mr .O'Sullivan to  the  extraordinary work carried out  by Paul O'Mahony who co-ordinated the whole Steam Engine recognition project from start to finish . Local historian Michael O'Mahony  read out  a poem about the legendary feats of TJ O'Mahony to a captive audience. A busload of eager followers travelled  from Rosscarbery to be present for this auspicious occasion.

A very strong Mitchlestown outfit got off to a good start and had the ball in the back of the Ross net 3 times in the opening quarter. In the end Mitchlestown ran out winners and collected the league points. These teams will meet again later in the first round of the Championship.

Ross added 6 more points before the break, with the pick of them coming from wing-forward Johnny Murphy.          The second half was to be a different story altogether with Kiskeam scoring 1-5 with reply. In fact Ross didn’t score until the final 10 minutes but then they went on a scoring spree, John Hayes had a goal after a very good build up. Points from Declan Hayes and Johnny Murphy again had Ross back on top. Carbery Rangers 2-9 Ballincollig 0-10

By Denis Hurley

Saturday, August 11, 2012

A pair of early John Hayes goals provided the platform for Carbery Rangers to advance to the Cork County SFC quarter-finals by overcoming Ballincollig at Bandon last night.

Green flags in the 10th and 16th minutes, the latter a penalty, had given the Rosscarbery side a 2-1 to 0-0 lead, Hayes profiting both times from Micheál O’Sullivan deliveries from frees.

First, he evaded two defenders before side-stepping goalkeeper David Lordan and finishing. Then he won another high ball and drew a foul from Cathal Fleming, giving Lordan no chance from the spot kick.

A big win looked to be in prospect at that stage as they had the wind behind them too, but they would score just once more in the half as Ballincollig’s reconfiguration helped them to gain a foothold. But, in the second-half, Ross’s clever running game, retaining possession until a chance opened up, reaped dividends as their opponents counted the cost of some very poor shooting.

Rangers’ hard work was exemplified by the performances of MacMahon and Cork panellist James Fitzpatrick, who never stopped running, while veteran O’Sullivan was his usual self in the air.

He did not have it all his own way, though, as Seán Kiely put in a fine shift for Ballincollig, who improved as the first-half wore on. The placement of the returning John Miskella as a sweeper and the relocation of Patrick Kelly, who started at full-forward, to a deeper role allowed Ballincollig to enjoy more of the play.

While Brian Glavin was their only scorer of the opening half, he got four and Ross went 11 minutes without a score, making it 2-2 to 0-4 at half-time.

Within three minutes of the restart, Ballincollig had added three unanswered points, from Kiely, Glavin and a wonderful John Kelly effort, but that momentum could not be sustained. Poor wides continued to punish them and Ross found their composure again with mature holding of possession, centre-back John O’Rourke doing much to provide impetus with driving runs.

Points by Fitzpatrick and John Hayes stemmed Ballincollig’s flow and while Patrick Kelly and Glavin responded, a goal looked essential if they were to overhaul the lead.

They tried to create chances with high balls into the goalmouth, but corner-back Enda Favier made a super block from sub Ian Coughlan and then a combination of goalkeeper Maurice Moloney and Fitzpatrick denied John Kelly. All the while, Ross were making the most of what possession they won to keep adding points, O’Rourke with a late one before Declan Hayes wrapped things up in injury time.

Rangers, who beat Clonakilty in the first round on May 6, now have another wait before meeting Clon again or Bishopstown in the last eight.

Deep in to injury time Ross led by 3 points but a free in to Midleton was to end up in the back of the Ross net from a rebound to ensure another 20 minutes of play. At this stage both teams were finding it tough going after giving so much over the hour and in what was a low score extra time it was Midleton who won out on a final score of Carbery Rangers 4-08 Midleton 5-09.

The under 21 Hurlers made club history on Saturday last when they won a very first Championship title when they got the better of a gallant O’Donovan Rossa team. Early scores from the impressive John O’Rourke saw Ross led from the start and they were not to relinquish this lead for the reminder of the game. In the last quarter of the half Skibb were showing signs that they were here to make a game of it and at half time only 4 points separated them the pick of the Ross scores coming from Micheal and Chris  O’Donovan.
Skibb started the second half well but when Timmy O’Donoghue net the back of the net for the first of Ross’ goals there was only going to be one outcome. It was a good weekend for the Carbery Rangers club where Championship wins were recorded by the Senior, Junior D and under 13 football teams.

WEST CORK CHAMPIONS
The Junior Ds were first to play when they took on Barryroe in the West Cork Final on Friday night in Clonakilty. It took Ross time to settle but when they did they kicked good scores to lead at half-time by 0-05 to 0-04. The second half started with Ross forcing the play and in the end won by 0-11 to 0-06.

SENIORS
The seniors were in action on Saturday against Bishopstown in the quarter–final. The first half went well with two early points from sean O Neill, and a Declan Hayes goal. A penalty save by the Ross goalie ensured Ross led at the break by 1-06 to 0-03. The second 30 minutes didn’t quiet go to plan and Ross had to do it the hard way when they were reduced to 12 players in the half. But this team is battle hardened and a great  performance saw them hold out for a 1 point win. Many of the decisions that the Referee made were very questionable to say the least but Ross played their hearts out and were well deserved their win.
